Popping noise in the rear when going over bumps?
Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that the sound comes from the rear?
I just battled a popping suspension sound for two months before finding the culprit. To me, while driving (with windows down or up) the sound seemed to come from the rear, but anyone else in the car with more ability to move around and listen said otherwise.
My girlfriend insisted it was the right front, and I had no way to find out because I don't know a single person who could drive a stick for me while I listened... heh.
However, after a few trips to meineke where they couldnt find the problem from visual inspections, a mechanic friend of mine took a look and identified the problem very shortly as the right stablizer link. ($27 from dealer, $4 for each bushing, $3 for each washer, so $48 I paid for the part) and it took him and me about 10 minutes to change it out.
He said this is a common problem, and when you goto most shops they tell you that many of the suspension parts need to be changed (when they really dont) because they dont bother to identify the real cause of the problem... they see old shocks and tell you that you need new ones (he criticizes people he works with as Midas for this common practic daily.)
So, in short, be SURE it's from the rear ... because if it isn't it could be many many other things then shocks!

Is it a popping noise or a knocking noise?
I have an Apexi WS exhaust and the rubber connectors that hold the muffler in place move around and the muffler bracket knocks against the frame until I get under there and re-adjust the connector. Just my .02.

I have the same problem but, I'm sure it is my shocks. When driving with people in the back seat it gets worse. Unless it's my exhaust hitting the ground. I hope not. Try riding with people in the backseat and driving over a smaller bump. If you hear it then it probably your rear shocks. Iluminas!!!

It's just a small (about 2-3") piece that has a tight ball joint in it (mine was very loose.) Sorry but those are the best directions that I can give about it .. I'm sure any manual like a Haynes has the real instructions. Good luck! If you happen to know any mechanic have them look at it while it's still on the car, if he/she is any good they can tell you if it has any play in it.
Saved me the cost of a whole new front suspension
get in the trunk and sorta jump up and down.. the idea is to get some weight in there to press down on the car. when u get out of the trunk listen for a "sucking-swooshing" sound... that's an indicator of bad shocks
I heard rattle and tapping noise. When I get over a bump slowly, when the back tire got over the bump, the noise goes "tap" on the rear left. I did what nadir did, but hear nothing. On the freeway, is not tapping noise, but at certain vibration which i could not even feel, rattle noise comes from the back. Sounds like trunk cover or the inside cover for the speakers. Is this a common problem?
