Pulled ECU Code 0505...

The check engine light was on .. so i pulled the code... :
0505 ...
which comes out to "No Failure Recorded/Detected"

.. mkay, so i said to myself, wtf is the point of that even being a code if there is no failure recorded or detected?..

So i went along and reset the ECU (to turn off check engine light). It went off, and stayed off for about 5 minutes, only to come back on again.

I pulled ECU codes again, and again got 0505. Frustrated, i reset ECU once more. And again, the check engine light came back on approximately 5 minutes later.

... So now i come to you guys, any ideas what the problem may be?

Instead of resetting the ECU (clockwise/counterclockwise, repeat again) try that step just one time. I think your ECU is still left in self-diagnosis mode.

mmm ... didn't reset ECU, but instead pulled some real codes.
0503 - problem with the front Oxygen Sensor on the right cylinder bank
0304 - Knock Sensor

... i was planning on changing up the KS as is, been getting weird MPG lately.. meh.

now i have a project ahead.

Anyone know any places where i can get o2 and KS for cheap in north east? (NJ ?) ... Pepboys?

-thanks ..

My suggestion would be to replace the KS first. My 0303 code (Front Oxygen sensor left bank) cleared itself when I changed my KS, as strange as that may sound.

If you must replace the O2 sensor, my suggest would be a Universal 3 wire sensor. The difference between a universal and an OEM replacement is that the OEM connects right to the harness where as the universal one requires you to cut and splice wires (directions are provided, but its straight foward and the supplies are in the box)

Its about $20-$30 cheaper

If you have open-end wrenches, it'll work fine for removal of the 02 sensor. IIRC its about 22mm. The KS bolt is 12mm.

if youve never replaced the KS yet, you should replace that first. but if you have in the past, you should replace the o2 sensor first. in fact just pull out the ks, and if it is cracked replace it, and then reset your computer. drive for a week and then if the CEL comes on, replace the defective part.

i don't believe that the KS has been replaced before, unless nissan does it at 60k or 100k check or w/e the f*ck it's at. I just got the car last week with check engine light already on (about 113k miles).

I wanted to make a post on some other topics about perhaps doing a GD on a KS, because it's always up on the boards somewhere, i see it's @ around 89$ right now and theres a good 2-3 other topics open with interested buyers. (Yes 89$ isn't much, but being cheap is the way to be!)

I was wondering, maybe i can just go to the junkyard, take out 2-3 KS from 95-99 max's and swap them into my car?

I mean shieeeet if they're defective my ECU should let me know right?

As long as the KS tested out fine from the Junkyard (multi-meter). Otherwise, its risky because you don't know how old that KS ect...

I'm just wondering if some KS's were over torqued from the factory? When I put mine on, I only torqued it a quarter of a turn to tighten it down firmly but still easily to remove.
