I went to get a key made b/c both of my keys broke where the keychain attaches. I decided to epoxy the top so I didnt have to buy one. Anyways, I went to the dealer and they charged approx $40 for the blank key with the correct chip and $50 to program and cut the key. If you want, you can try to buy a blank key from ebay or somewhere online. However, make sure you get the correct blank. I bought a 2K maxima blank and was told that it would fit the 99 maxima. They are different sizes and have different chips so I returned it.

yeah, but if you buy it online its more less $30 plus shipping, then you need the programming which will be another (with luck) $40 to $50 add up to worst case $85... total, more less the same as a dealer... and you are taking the risk that the chip is different...

I have a 99 Max and my friend has a 95. I noticed we had different keys, but I never knew that my key had a chip in it. If it has a chip, why are we able to lock our keys in our cars? I thought that was one of the reasons that they put chips in keys.

I really need to get another key or two. The cost is crazy though. I only have a single key left cause the dealer that I bought it from only gave me one.

Yes, the transponders were introduced in 99, however, we chipless folk cant lock the car with the key in thie ignition either, that's not what the chip does. What the chip does do is make the car all but impossible to start without a properly programmed transponder key. In fact, up until late 90 not even the Q45's had transponders, rather they had the "High Security" Key, which you had to get raped on because only the dealer could cut them.
