Skyline engine...

Heres a strange question for ya, but I wanna do some research...and dont respond calling me a moron or something ridiculous like that, this is just a thought.

A friend of mine bought a 98 max, and the engine is shot. He was just throwing out random ideas, and came up with the idea for a custom made "Maxline". Basically he wants to entirely rebuild this car with a skyline engine tranny, and so on. but keep the maxima body. How possible is this? I realize it would be horribly expensive...but you can do anything with money. Any ideas?

This has been done before, and for very little money. In fact, I don't really know of anyone who has their original VQ in their Maxima, they've all done the swap. I'm personally doing the conversion into a Freightliner Semi, i'm gonna call it a Maxliner.

just read the FAQs..there are a million posts about this exact same thing. What your friend should do is just buy another VQ, they're dirt cheap, around 400 bux. Fact is, he bought a maxima, not a skyline. There are easier ways to get your car to be fast.

For the amount of money that would cost your friend it would far more worth it to just get another car. Something like that would require an insane amount of body work as I believe it would require an entirely new custom chassis, among heaps of other things. If he's got money to burn he may as well just fit a 3.5 from the 5.5 gen in it and turbo it. Much more practical.

Dear moron,
If someone was gonna try and get a RB26DETT for a 10 year old car they might as well just look into just getting a skyline. Or like the wise orgers say get a VQ and mod the ish outta it. And speaking of skylines anyone catch a glimpse at the new GT-R Top Secret Racing did with a variant of the Infinity 4.5 engine pushing 800HP(there is speculation that the new GT-R might actually be a V8)? It looks so dope.

Does your name stand for insane dreamer? You would have to be both to undertake this, but if you have access to parts and your own shop to work in, this kind of customization would not be all that out of the question. Yes its true that it would not make sense and if you have money and want a faster car you should just go buy a faster car, but some people make modding a hobby and are willing to spend large amounts of money to have the car they want. Is it possible to put a skyline engine in a maxima body, yes it is, but unless you own a repair shop, a body shop, AND have access to all the parts and plenty of time to do it, it is just not feasible. Personally, I say if you want a skyline, buy a skyline. A max with a skyline motor would be awesome, however for probably the same money, I would be more excited to see a skyline with a skyline motor.

just use the 350z drivetrain (VQ is much lighter than iron-block RB and is more compact, and can be single or twin turbocharged), which will require new front and rear subframes and possibly a rollcage to tie it all together. gas tank will have to be moved in the trunk area. i say $50-70K budget, a competent chassis spot, a body shop for some body adjustments, and about 6 months worth of time should do it
if a focus can be rwd with a 5.0 or a "cammer", so can a maxima. the focus conversion would run about $50k. have fun!

unless its a 240... becuase then its not all as hard as this. a buddy of mine put one in his. god there was no room under the hood. and he had to make room. then he found out he had a leak somewhere but still went to the track. with the stock 240 tires he ran a 12.2 spining in every gear down the whole track. he ends up getting kicked out for no roll cage lol. so he went home eventualy fixed the leak so he had full boost then he sold it to some guy for 15 g's. man i want to see that thing with some slicks. o and if you have to ask if a skyline motor will work you cant put it in. it takes many many hours of fabrication. it could be done. ive seen many cars built pretty much from scratch and im telling you right now, if you are not precise with everything you will break everything very easaily. i mean hey who wouldnt love a rwd 4th gen but its to much money. i love my car but i know i would love a differnt car if i had the money. but a rwd 4th gen would be dope. but dont get to exited.

Actually putting in a heavy iron blocked I6 where a I4 used to be can't be good for the handling bias.

There is no point of swapping anything besides some kind of VQ engine in a 95+ maxima.

No inline 6 will not fit in our engine bay without ripping apart the car. A 240sx would be a much better candidate for this. The RB25DET is a relatively easy swap. The RB26DETT is harder since it barely fits and you have to use the RWD RB25 tranny. I would rather see someone swap a VQ30DET in a 240sx but that is just me. If you don't know what any of this means then you are not ready to undertake this kind of project.

Thanks to those who contributed useful information. It was all just a thought..like those idiots that put jet engines in trucks and vans and crap. This wasnt meant for a daily driver, but a drag, or show car.
