The coppers are NGK BKR5E-11, not BKR5EGP despite what MDozy says. When the time comes, I intend to replace my plugs with NGK platinums, PFR5G-11.

I haven't talked to one supplier who recommends the coppers over the platinums for a 4th Gen Maxima.

You can pay 3-4x as much for only 2x the life. I have NGK BKR5E-11 in my car.

It depends on your maintenance schedule. Do you prefer changing spark plugs at 60k miles or 30k miles. the OEM Spark plugs will give u 60k and the copper 30k. There is some argument to this but it all depends on you. Also Performance. hmmmm

I strongly suspect you can get a lot more than 60K out of a set of platinums. I took mine out a month ago at 58K, cleaned them up on a wheel and put them back in . They're good to go. My friends's brother did the same with his platinum plugs in his 99 Maxima which has 78K on it and he has run only 87 octane in the 2 years he has owned the car.

I think the big thing about 60K on the plugs is to get them out of the aluminum block. Mine came out with no difficulty.

Why are 5th Gen plugs rated at 105K and 4th Gen at 60K?

True that, spig, I am using the coppers as well, and they are workinig just fine. They are too cheap not to use. Yes, the Plats are good spark plugs, but they are just too expensive.

You can also get more than just 30K out of a set of coppers

Over a year-and-a-half later, I'm joining you on the Iridium front. My mother-in-law's 2000 Maxima GXE has the dreaded P1320 code, and my research on the issue directed me to these forums, and I just ordered some new plugs and am in the process of ordering a new set of coils. Her car is low mileage (only 45K), but is 7 years old, and is one of the apparently growing number of vehicles to suffer from this problem. Wish me luck!

Using G-Powers....based on the website, they are plats but maybe not as much as the recommended plugs. No issues so far.

I am still running my OEM laser platinum plugs with 66,800 mostly highway miles on them. My car runs like new and the fuel economy remains better than 95% of the owners on this forum.

I will change the plugs later in the year, only because I have to go through emissions testing.

I would have been on my 3rd set of coppers now.

Based on most of your posts I've read, you don't seem to drive much higher than the speed limit either..so of course you'd get better fuel economy. I just changed my plugs about three months ago. The set I took out had 100,xxx miles on them, and yeah, I could have cleaned them, but I didn't want to. I still had good power and economy with those too.

It is true that I don't drive much above the speed limit, other than when I air it out in the middle of nowhere once in a while.

I have achieved 500 miles plus on a tank several times and 550 plus 3 times driving to the Interior of BC from the Coast. This entails driving from sea level to over 6,000 feet in elevation, back down to about 2,000 feet and the reverse on the way home. More than half the trip is made at about 75 mph with passengers and luggage. The balance, once I am out of the city, is at about 65-70 mph.

I see no need to cruise at 90 mph.

I also know how fast my car will go because I wound it at least an inch off the end of the odometer in 1997 and can attest to Road & Track statement that a 4th Gen Maxima (95SE 5-speed) is capable of going 143 mph. Been there, done that and got the T-shirt!

Platinum = 110k = no problems until now. I just started to get a weird shutter when taking off (either slow or getting on it), so I'm gonna change the plugs and see if that's the problems.

I actually have had a similar problem from before I changed my plugs. It also happens to me sometimes when I change gears and don't get the revs right. It didn't go away after changing them. Please let us (me) know if you feel a difference when you switch your out.

I am using NGK IX Irridium plugs. The smaller electrode reduces firing voltage. Hopefully that reduces stress on the coils.

Will do. It doesn't happen all the time, and I can't tell if it's an engine problem or a tranny problem yet. I'll keep you posted as I get more information and switch out my plugs.

When I replaced my platinum plugs after 60k, I did not notice much difference with the new plugs. Some whitening on the sparking element but not much. Probably could have gone 15,000 - 30k more.

But it was fun to change 'em, and the psychological boost of having new plugs is a bonus too.

And your point is? Better to resurrect an old thread with information in it than to create another new thread every 2nd day.

This is probably the least informative spark plug thread in org history, and should have been left for dead more than 2 years a go, it was a failure to begin with.

So is their a definitive answer to which spark plugs to use? I'm going to change my soon and seems like the general consensus is the platinums?

jesus christ. the answer is....................

plats last twice as long.
coppers are 1/3 the price.
they perform the same and you will not be able to tell the difference between coppers plats or iridiums (as long as they are all NGK).
figure out if you are cheap or lazy and make your decision accordingly and
PLEASE LET THIS THREAD DIE!!
