Y Pipe Issues For A 99....help!!!!

Stock Nissan y-pipe....notice how the front exhaust manifold diameter is significantly larger that the normal 2.5" pipe in the photos below. Also, the stock pipe has 5 holes bolting it to the manifold while the new pipe has only 3.

Pics of the new y-pipe

We are trying to figure out if the new Stillen y pipe in the lower photos would be able to match up to the stock exhaust manifild(s). Car has 4 O2 sensors......3 in y pipe and 1 in right bank exhaust manifold. The new y pipe only has holes for 2 sensors.

I am not sure about 4 O2 Sensors theory. There should be 2 in the Y-Pipe and 1 in the Cat/B-Pipe. Look at the link below

You have a 95? Only 99+ cali specs have that style y pipe with the seperate huge precat. If so then you need a 99 cali spec y pipe.

I didn't know stillen made the equal length y pipe for stock headers. That is nice.

Yes, finally an aftermarket Y-pipe that will have a smooth sound similar to the stock Y-pipe

In order to get that y pipe on, you need to take off your front pre cat assembly, and replace it with a fed spec exhaust manifold. You also have to weld two O2 bungs on to the new ypipe.

You definately got the wrong y pipe.

Hopefully you remember who you talked to at Stillen.

Tell them you want a refund, and to pick up shipping too. It's thier fault, not yours. Good luck.

Yeah, except for that nice 180 degree turn. I would think there would be some flow restriction. Might as well left your stock y- pipe on.... I'm not impressed.

How else do you expect to equalize the lengths on a transversly mounted engine? You do understand the concept of equalizing the two banks right?

...it allows each cylinder's exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector. It also equalizes the pressure in each cylinder to allow the engine to run smoother. That is turn makes the exhaust smoother in sound.

I'll gladly sacrifice what little HP I'm losing, or if any at all, for that smooth sound due to that 180degree turn. Cattman headers have a similar design also.

I understand the theory behind it, I guess I'm just against losing any HP due to the 180 bend. Losing 2 hp (just guessing here) is 10% of what the y-pipe gives. And when striving for 300 hp at the wheels, every HP counts.

I wish somebody would do a y-pipe shoot out and compare them all. As far as sound, Is it really noticeable or only a slight difference? I would imagine only a trained ear could hear the difference. Just curious.

Between an aftermarket Y-pipe and the OEM y-pipe, aside from the loudness, there is a definate diffence in sound quality. One is smooth sounding(OEM equal-length)similar to an i-6 engine, while the other has a sharp, uneven pulsed noise (aftermarket Y-pipe unequal-length) that I associate with GM V6-like sound.

there are much more restrictive exhaust components than that 180 degree bend. Like the cats and the muffler.

I personally dont think it would result in any measurable HP decrease. Maybe someone could prove me wrong?

I think the even backpressure would be much better than having a straight pipe. One of the reasons I dont think more Y pipes are equal length is to save manufacturing cost.

That helps. I wish I could stand next to a stock Max with a typical aftermarket y-pipe and a catback exhaust; and another Max with a y-pipe with equal length tubing and the same catback exhaust to hear the difference.

Somebody do a dyno shootout! **cough** Cattman **cough** hint, hint

I would love to see how my Cattman y-pipe compares!!

That 180* turn would actually gain hp as long as it was mandrel bended compared to the unequal length y pipe designs. A mandrel bent 180* turn will not restrict flow enough to even second guess putting it there. It would be nice if LSS and warpspeed did the same thing. It doesn' look like it would cost that much more to incorporate into the current designs. How much would that y pipe cost normally?
