my ecu knows i'm afraid

So I checked my ecu for the first time today since I failed my emissions test during my inspection yesterday and wanted to see what the codes were. The guy who did the inspection told me it was the oxygen sensor that set off the check engine light, but when i checked the codes i got these three:

0309 - undefined
0510 - undefined
0705 - EVAP Control System

i have no idea why i got two codes that don't exist and i know that they are right because i checked them about 5 times. since i am still fairly new to the inner workings of cars i don't know what the evap control system is or if it has anything to do with my emissions. help!!!

thanks, tim

also, since i didnt get a code which points to the o2 sensor(s) as the problem does that mean the guy who did my inspection was wrong?

I think you have flipped the long and short blinks... (assuming that you pulled the codes via the blinking CEL).

Its long and then short blinks:

If you interpret:

0309 as 0903 - that points to EVAP Vent Control Valve
0501 as 1005 - thats the EGRC- Solenoid Valve

Go back and pull the codes again to make sure you got them right the first time, i.e. slow blinks followed by the fast blinks. You got it right on the 0705 - so I'm surprised that you flipped the other two - but thats what most likely happened. Double check and get back to us.

i wish you were right but i'm pretty sure i got it down right, there were steady long blink followed immediately by quick short blinks, then a pause before the next code was transmitted

I have 0309 right now ... used to come off/on every few hundred miles but now it's on solid. Praying I pass emissions still (this doesn't really deal with emissions anyways) in november... taxachusetts is getting so **** about everything with car inspections over the last few years!

One other thing you could try is go to Autozone and see if their OBD-II Scanner pulls up any more information. Good luck and keep us posted if you learn anything new.

so its the evap control system, the evap canister vent control valve, and the Downstream oxygen sensor maximum voltage monitor. Well, knowing the problem is the first step, now i just need to figure out how to fix the **** and i'm all set.

You need to replace the Evap Canister Valve and the downstream O2 sensor. Reset the ECU after that and you should be all set. If you don't have a Haynes manual, get one, it will guide you through the repairs. Both are easy to do yourself.

are you sure I dont have to just replace a unit which monitors the downstream o2 sensor? it says its a "maximum voltage monitor fault" which makes it sound like the "monitor" is the problem... and to clarify, "downstream" means the o2 sensor after the cat right?

also, could you tell me the page number in the Haynes manual which could guide me through the replacement of the Evap canister valve?

thanks
tim
