I need a new one of those cardboard wheel well covers that goes in the trunk. the one i have is beat up and sinks in. any way to get a newer stronger one?

 

Use the old one as a template and cut a new one out of some plywood?

I was thinking about doing it this summer.

 

that's a good idea, or some kind of particle board. i know there is one for sale in the classifieds...? but you'd probably want something stronger.

Some light particle board sounds like a good idea. You could buy one from a junkyard or a dealer.

 

Might want to think about some 1/4 (or even better 1/8 if if you can find it...not sure how common it is) birch plywood. The stock one is particle board which is weaker.

 

I was thinking some kind of fiberboard or plywood. Particle board is too flimsy.

 

I used 1/4" fiberboard to replace mine, it has worked so far, supports subs and the luggage I had in there last trip.

 

i was thinking that the particle board in there has been fine for almost 8 years or so and is now showing it's age. a fresh-cut replica of the OEM part i think would last long enough and i feel that plywood or some kind of wood would (haha, "wood would") be too heavy? is fiberboard different than particle board? is it strong and light?

 

how about fiberglass or CF? would be light and pretty strong.

 

it's pretty easy to do with some mdf. not the lightest, but it's cheap and holds up really well.

 

i was thinking fiberglass also, but it might not be worth the price, and obviously not for CF unless you have a system to show off. if you put the carpet back in, it's not really worth having anything fancy in there, and fiberglass alone may be too slippery/things sliding around. depends, i guess.

 

I wasn't suggesting the CF for looks but because it would be lightweight and should be able to support a lot more weight.

 

Anyone thought of plexi glass? stereo shops should be able to get hold of the stuff, and it wont break down like particle board. I plan on eventually cutting out the wheel well and weld in a "tray" of sorts for an amp or two with a plexi top, I know plexi is usually showy but like i said its light and strong.

 

i would only use plexi if i were going to shove some amps or something in the wheel well for show, but i just need something to support the subs. i think ill pick up some of that plywood from home depot or something. thanks guys!
