Checking Motor Mounts

Okay my car creaks in the front, I'm sure its the mounts.. sometimes I can go on & off the gas and hear it creak.. othertimes its silent.. I don't think its the dash.

Heres the Changing motor mounts howto

Is this the best way to check them too? The haynes manual says you need engine hoist or sling to support the engine, the guy above just uses bottle jack and some 2x4

Checking them is pretty easy, have a buddy help you.

Open the hood, start the car and put it in drive. Apply the parking brake and hold your foot on the brake pedal. Apply some throttle and watch the engine, it shouldn't move. Do the same thing with the car in reverse, again the engine shouldn't move. If you have a 5 speed, do the same test by loading the engine slightly by slipping the clutch in gear while the parking brake is on firmly.

If you see the engine lift up a bit as you apply throttle, you have a broken motor mount. Good mounts should hold the engine securely in place during this test.

The last mechanic I took the car did your test above, and the engine did move, but how much is too much? he was saying some flex should be there, mine makes a definite rock/dip.. so I guess the mounts are shot
