AC Dying... What to do...

My compressor started to die a couple of months ago. One day I was driving like normal and turned on my AC and it got really loud. (like another little motor had turned on). I pretty much assumed the bearing in the compressor was going bad, but I took it in to have it looked at and the AC guy said it was the compressor, and would replace it for 700. I have also heard that if I run the AC it will eventually lock up and rip my belt off and .. etc... so... should I pay the guy or does someone know a link to a good DIY. I think I could do it, but I don't wanna go into it blind. I would like to see some help online. And if I do do it myself is there any advice you can give me.

get a mechanics manual on the maxima like they sell in vip. It doesnt cost very much and ittle pretty much tell you about anything you need to know. Some are organized and written better than others but they all work. Some are just more frustrating. Good luck!

Go somewhere else. I bought my compressor from my local Nissan dealer for about $340 dollars and had it put in by a mobile A/C mechanic for a little over $100 dollars (included the recharging of the system).
