Just wanna know if it is a direct bolt-on without alterations. I need one soon.

Everything's essentially the same besides the muffler. As far as the manifold/y-pipe, you're better off with the 4th gen pieces.

If you're talking about the muffler, the hangers will line up fine, but you'll have to get it welded to your pipe

http://forums.maxima.org/showpost.ph...48&postcount=5 (last pic shows where I had it welded on)

What's the best way to pick one up on the cheap? I haven't been fully satisfied with my Warpspeed "dynomax clone" muffler. Decent "growl" and good airflow, but it looks worse than the stock muffler (it's really huge and fat - so it doesn't tuck nicely under the car).

Any suggestions?

What note does the 5th gen produce compared to stock, and say a straight through type?

I keep a data base on these replacement parts/issues for when I confront them and my notes say get a 2001 muffler. I'm not sure why that's recommended over a 2000 muffler but evidently one of the selling features of the 01 muffler is it supposedly looks better.

Hey manual, did it fit on without any welding and cutting, was it a direct bolt on without any problems?
Do you just have the muffler or the other piece too? Also do you need gaskets?

i just have the muffler.....i took it to a muffler shop and it had to be welded on. They also had to make some hangers for it. It cost like $50 to get it on there. But it is quiet and IMO looks much better than the stock one, so it was worth it.

I just did not want anything with sound...

I changed mine to 2K2 as well. Wanted some quietness. Paid $100 for used muffler.

I think mine is a 2002 model (2 seperate tailpipes where as the 2001 model is 2 tail pipes connected). Not sure of the years exactly.

Had to get it welded on.

See my cardomain page for more (and rate my page while you're there! )

The 5th gen muffler fits on the stock hangers, but I believe the pipe inlet is on the opposite side as the stock one.
When I had mine put on, I think they flipped it around, and then they just welded it onto the stock piping.
Sounds a little deeper though. It is great!

The only thing thats holding me back is that the fifth gen double exhaust tips will look weird on the stock 4th gen rear bumper cut-out. Brudaddy, how'd you make the cut out on your? recipricating saw?

I read on Brudaddy's cardomain site that its not necessary to cut a hole for the double exhaust tips as it hangs lower than our 4th gen tips.
Hmmm...a brainstorm...now that's got me thinking about how to fill in that semi-circle opening....get a scrap piece of bumper, cut it with a dremel to fit and then paint it to match?

I don't have this particular muffler, and I'm not boosted, but I think that when you are boosted, air-flow becomes WAY more important than when naturally aspirated.

I'd imagine that a boosted maxima would want more flow than a 5th gen muffler affords. I may be wrong on that, so don't quote me.

Boosted or not it will not net anything worth writing home over, maybe 4 hp MAX

Or maybe that boosted and n/a maximas can both use 5th gen mufflers since a muffler is only there to produce sound.

Agreed. Probably zero or one HP for naturally aspirated. More if boosted, just b/c airflow is increased. But what boosted maxima would be running a stock muffler! Unless they really enjoy a quiet ride?

yea but what muffler give you worth while gains anyways? now a cat-back might but not just a simple weld on muffler. nothing on the butt dyno. Honestly i do not think the double tip looks bad on the opening.....i guess most of you are perfectionists but you really do not notice it unless you really care about it......

i got mine not for the gains which i knew there was none. I just wanted a better lookng muffker that was as close to stock sound as i could get.....i have never seen a bumper someone cut looking that great either.....

Headers -y/pipe give most horsepower gains ... Anything other than that is not worth the hassle. Unless you're like 96sleeper and have a cut-out. But that's for racing purposes only, so unless you track your car regularly, b-pipe and muffler have no buisness getting replaced.

I would not use a recipricating saw....it is too bulky.

They guy that did mine royally screwed it up.
In hind sight, I would just take a rasp or file or dremmel or something like that to do it. I know it would take a little bit longer, but it would look a lot better. Mine is not exactly straight.

Keep in mind, there doesn't need to be much of a whole. The 5th gen muffler....at least the one I got.....hangs down a little further than the stock one under the bumper. Just make the tallest part of the original hole....stay the tallest part.

It frees up the whole setup.
I have an aftermkt y and larger piping....so I would guess all that with the 5th gen muffler gave me about 20hp gain.

It sounds a lot better to me. It is not that much different, but it just growls a little deeper.

Yeah, boosted needs more air flow than just a muffler, but the 5th gen is just about as free flowing as you can get out there.
It is just a lot cheaper and better looking than some others.

You are right about that.
Doing nothing else but muffler will not get you anything really.....except sound differences.

personally i think the best setup would be a full exhaust with a stock 2k+ muffler... looks stock but packs the same punch

Well, a high flow cat does nothing. You get no gains from it and you just get worse emissions out of it.

Just get 2.5" piping from the cat back and 2000+ muffler.
