Service engine soon?

Hi guys,
Got a 99 Maxima with 86000 miles, change oil/filter every 3000, air filter is ok, fuel filter is ok; spark plugs were changed by previous owner at 30000 with Bosch platimium 4. (was waiting to hit the 90000 to replace them for NGK platinum. I just got the orange light: Service engine soon.
What can it be?
Where can I get a free or cheap computer/code check?
How long can I drive car before stops running?
Is it dangerous to drive it like that for a few more days?
Thank you in advance for your help guys.

Take the panel off, right of the gas pedal and read the codes. 99 you need a tiny screwdriver. It's in the stickies how to's. READ THEM.

my service engine light is on too. If I keep using the car, will there be any major damage?

Alot of peoiple on Org have driven years with the Service light on.....I suppose it depends on the problem....I would read the codes and fix it, or take it to a shop and get it looked at.....

yeah I talking about the check engine soon light being on. I know I should just take take it in to the shop and get it checked, but I'm really low on money right now. I got the car about a month ago and already spent over $700.00 parts and tune-up. If I keep using the car for a few more weeks, until I save some money for the check-up,will there be any serious damage?

Not knowing what code is flashing, there is no definite answer to your question....

Most likely

If you car is still running fine, probably an o2 sensor, but since there is three of them, you need to pull the codes. I got an obdii reader from advanced auto several years ago for 130. See that they got them now for ~115. Buy one, if you got the money. If you take it to a garage, they will charge probably $75 to pull the codes. But most likely will be an o2 sensor. just my 2 cents.

Hop in your car.. drive to autozone... Tell them your light is on. Guy will come out and scan for the codes, read them to you, and might even tell you how to fix it. If your light came on and car is still running fine its probably nothing big and im sure its ok to keep driving, but get it scanned at autozone its free. My ses light has been on since i got my intake in over 2 months ago... that air temp sensor is just hanging around. Gotte take care of that one of these days.

I am getting a 1107 Code. I looked it up and it indicates several transmission issues. Does anyone know what symtoms I would experience with a 1107 code if correct? (Trick question as I am having a slight problem) I don't want to sway your answer but I will say it effects 1st gear only.

Good luck to all of us
