cheap drop, anybody have ideas?

hey im looking for suggestions for a lowered setup, i reaaaly want to get rid of this 4x4 look but have to do it kindof cheaply. i know some will say to do it right and spend the right money but thats not a huge option i have alot to do on my car yet.
can anybody recommend a full setup from stock to as low as i can go?
thanks -matt

suspension isn't something that you wanna do 'cheaply'. Think about it...this is what your car is riding on. If you dont have the cash for it now, save up until you have enough cash for a quality set up. Have you checked the For Sale forum? There's always lots of ppl selling springs n such.

if you have other problems with the car, i would think that performance mods and mods just for looks would come later. your slammed car's not gonna look too sweet if it spendin all its time in your garage or at the dealer. take care of the essentials, then start considering the mods.

Yeah, you always get what you pay for. Cars aren't something to go cheapo on. Just save, save, save! It will be worth it in the end.

Going the cheap route will only end up costing you more in the long run:

1) tires will wear out faster
2) your other suspension components will wear out faster
3) it's unsafe and dangerous (ie: cutting coil springs - cheapest route)
4) very poor ride quality, you will quickly get tired of driving your car

So with all that, why even throw off the smooth balance ride your car has now? The only sensible reason to go lower is to retain stock ride and feel as much as possible, w/o sacrificing safety, yet enhancing your ride's stance.

YOu could let the air out of your tires . That ought to lower you some. Actually its not a good idea to go cheap on your suspension. I waited a year and a half to change out my H&R's /tockiko hp's to s-techs and illumina's. I didn't get my max aligned and drove 1600 miles, f#ckd my tires all up bad! Suspension is a sensitve thing so be wise. Your better off waiting and saving for a good set up

For new springs try the ones Daniel got from CMS. You might want to talk to him. They're pretty cheap though for new ~$110CAD.

Buy someone's used setup. Here's one for you. KYB AGX + Sprint springs for 300.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=415106

This one is also a possibility.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=413594

Eibach springs, AGX struts

There, I did all the work for you, my good deed for the day. Go look around in the 4th gen classifieds.

You can go the cheap way and just buy some springs and use the stock shocks, but that will only last you 2-3 months so plan on changing them soon....

I would recomed just finding a used setup for sale

ANd lower is better

They're cheap springs but you gotta have the struts to support them. AKA Springtechs. I've got the Koni Yellows with them.

yeah yeah, I am. don't worry! I just got my illuminas today! i love seeing the UPS truck roll up my driveway! S-Techs should be here by friday at the latest so a weekend install is the plan. I hope it goes well. I don't have air tools... am i gonna be fine, or what? If i have a good breaker bar, will that help? i just keep seeing 'air tools' in all of the installation directions on VQPower and the .org here that I'm a little hesitant. I guess I'll just have to have a go at it.

You'll be fine...I just did mine 2 weeks ago. A breaker bar will help, a big strong friend will be perfect. You'll need either one when tackling the 2 front strut lower mounting bolts and the rear shock lower mounting bolt. Everything else is a piece of cake. The front struts are side-specific, don't get them switched or your front drop will not be the way its supposed to. Make sure that the coil springs are seated correctly on the spring seat. There are some good write-ups in the stickies.

thanks, yeah, those were the ones I was worried about. i blew a CV boot a while and got grease all up in there, and of course sand and such quickly followed, so I hoping that it is just dirty and can be cleaned up rather than actually too rusty and seized. also, thanks for pointing out that the fronts are side-specific. I just got my Illuminas today and saw that they had the part number engraved on the side, i think. BB3102 and BB3103. which goes on which side? anyone? i haven't even opened up the directions yet, so if it is in there, nevermind then.

Not sure which side is which, you might want to go to the website and do a part # search. Hopefully that'll tell you which one is for what side. If you think that those bolts are rusted, try spraying some WD40 or Penetrating Oil on it and let it sit for a bit. They do wonders for that.

tell you the truth, if your in British Columbia, i'm pretty sure that your winters are pretty harsh over there. You would want coilovers. Unless you have a winter beater. But reading that you want to go the cheapest way, i ASSUME that this is your only car. You definately want to get coilovers since when it snows, you can raise the car back up so you don't become your neighborhood snow plow. When i first started hooking up my car, i didn't have any money. i was short half the money. so i just used a Credit Card. i know its not the smartest thing. But its better doing it right the first time. Think about the future. Summer comes, drop it like no other, winter, higher it like its stock. what a wonderful thing coilovers are...
