Identifying ecu's

does anyone know how i can go about identifying the model number of an ecu to make sure it will work in my car. they sell them on ebay for cheap, i just need a way to identify them. thanks!

if you are looking to upgrade the ecu:

1995 or 1996 ECU
Match your transmission ( auto or manual )
