Socket to remove Spark plugs

Hi,

Last night I was trying to remove the spark plugs, and although I had bought the correct socket, the spark plug was unscrewed, but I was not able to pull it out...it kepted sliding off the socket...my fingers didn't reach it to grab it..what tool am I missing? The thin plirers also didn't help..it's almost like I need a magnet of some sort to pull it out.

Any recommendation?

...come on guys...use a spark plug 5/8 socket, it's written on it. They are made to kinda grab the plug, so you can can get your plug, socket and extension out without any trouble. Easiest thing to do.

to what el_m* just said.. there are special spark plug sockets that have a rubber grommet that fits snugly around the plug. However, you should always have one of these in your toolbox - very useful for many different things: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00941310000

I changed mine last night as well, copper $1.68 each. The Bosch Platinum 4 were totally burned at 55, 000 miles highway (never will put those on any of my cars) they were supposed to last 60000, big lie.
Well I had the same problem, luckily found a little piece of round rubber pipe that fit inside socket and after a few tries got them out. Took me 2 hours to change them; hopefully second time takes me less. The magnet is a great idea, will buy one soon.

1. You are using the wrong size socket. The correct size is 5/8.
2. The correct size socket needs to be an actual 'spark plug socket' that comes with a rubber ring in it so the socket can be pulled out.

No, I am using the right size...5/8..it's a long alley in there and it slips off no matter what...but it doesn't have the rubber thingy your talking about.

I'm going to try njmodi's suggestion and buy that "special secret tool"

Thanks..gonna try again tonight.

njmodi and I are talking about the same thing... there is nothing special or secret about it. You can buy the spark plug socket at sears. Unless youre talking abou the magnet... which is always a good thing to have anyways.

These spark plugs always get stuck on me too and well, I've used the magnet... but what I found that worked for my cheap a$$ applying duct tape securely to the end as an entension of sticky tape to the socket... make sure its not too hot because the adhesive will melt. As the socket looses the plug the tape catches the plug and I twist the tape and catch it. It's hard to explain, but it seems to work for me. Just don't lose the tape.

well at went to crappy tire and bought the 5/8 plug with a rubber lining in it..The cost was about $8..I hope it works.

I tried also buying the NGK plugs but it wasn't listed on the data sheet, so I didn't know what to buy. With only Bosh as my alternate solution, I walked away

For a 1998 maxima is it stll NGK BKRSE-11?

thanks

Once I break the plug aloose, I slip a rubber hose over it, loosen it and bring it out that way. Also great for re-installing to prevent cross threading.
