Dark green/blackish "grease" on rim

I was washing my car today and while cleaning my rims, I found a dark green, almost black substance that had the consistency of grease, covering the inside of the rim. This was the front, driver-side rim. It had also gotten onto the strut. What is it and what do I need to fix?

The CV boot broke open.

Act quick and replace the boot before the joint gets contaminated or else you'll wind up replacing the whole joint and or axle.

I'm replacing the axle next weekend when I do the 5spd swap. Think it'll be okay for another 100 miles or so?

THT - should be no problems (other than the mess) driving around for another 100miles (don't quote me on that ). Since you noticed the grease, the crack is likely recent.

It wasn't there last weekend when washed my car so it had to have happened in the last seven days. I'm not too worried but I need to ask Mike what else I should buy.

You already have the axles for your new tranny right? As long as you have the axle seals you don't need anything else (as far as I know).

what could it be if you find alot of grease on top of the oil filter. i had my axles replaced already and the filter was instaled after the axle change. it was alot of grease too, like 2 fingers full of it. im lookin around and i have no visable leaks.

Just make sure that your car is not making a clicking/popping noise when turning.
That means the CV joint is already bad, and could totally fail at any point. You don't really want this to happen when you are driving.

THT, you should be ok. When this happened to my truck (due to excessive front-end lift - IFS), I busted the boots. I drove it for several hundreds of miles before getting them replaced and have had no issues from that. Just avoid wet, muddy, and unpaved roads as the debri can get kicked up into the cv joints.

You will be fine for another 100 miles. I drove around with a torn CV boot for well over 2 months before the joint finally started clicking.

With all the axle/cv threads it looks like its just that time on the org. Funny how all of a sudden everybody is having this, I had to replace a axle/boot 3 weeks ago.

I'm in the same boat too.. My driverside axle boot/cv boot is cracked and leaking grease. I think I've let it go so long that I'll probably just spring for the $60 raxle axle when I get around to changing it.
