rear wheel bearing replacement?

The rear of my '99 Max has been pretty loud lately. A loud humming or droning has been happening whenever I get up to speed. I thought it was my cheap Kumho HP4 716s but I rotated the tires front to back and it is still happening just as much. It's so bad that passengers are thinking there's something wrong with the muffler or something, but I figure it's not the muffler since it only happens at speed. It happens whether or not I'm on the gas, and it's really noticeable above 30-40 mph.

So I read up online and it sounds like it could be a rear wheel bearing. Is this easy to replace? Or should I send it into a mechanic? If the mechanic, how much do you think the job would be? Anyone else have this problem before?

Thanks in advance.

I bought my 96 used and it had Nanking tires. They did the same thing. The noise went away when I replaced them with Michelins.

yea matter of fact i changed mine this well. nothin to do with tires if it just came out of no where. its your wheel bearing. the process is easy but u do need a tool to take it off. check motorvate. but i bought the hub as well as the bearing it cost 90 bucks. that is easier to install than just the bearing. took me and my dad about 20 min. good luck that noise is ANNOYING!

Thanks for the reply.

Motorvate has the procedure for the fronts. Mine is coming from the back. I would think there is some difference; the backs should be simpler since there is no steering or drive involved. But then again what do I know?

I'll take it to a mechanic tomorrow to see what they think. I hope it's not the tires; they're practically brand new.

The back is not like the fronts at all... You have to replace the entire hub assembly. This can cost more but the installation is much much easier.
