Yeah, it's wonderful BUT I suck at driving stick. Got any advice for starting from a stop? I think I release the clutch waaaay to quickly

Blackbird really knows his **** so he made it look ridiculously easy. Nismo3112 did the interior and he too knows what he's doing. There were other members who helped too such as njmodi, nick, ephraim, Dave Sz, hectorc, shmad. Is that everyone?

to that... BlackbirdVQ made it seem as though he was just changing the oil. Props to Nismo3112 for the interior stuff - that was not trivial by any means and awkward getting under the dask and shifter. The whole pedal/clutch/slave cylinder conversion is an exercise in patience. Glad I was there to help and see it happen!

Just to update every one, IT STILL DOESN'T START. We tried everything from the crank position sensor, new MAF, checked all fueses, popped the clutch and nothing worked. Just don't know why its not starting. I will take it to Jeff at Maximum Tuning and see whathe says. Hopefully he has the answer. THT, you never PM'ed me back. I really could have used your guys help.

I'd like to help but you have a 99. I'm not doing anything 99s ever again, it's the ****ed up model year for maximas.

Mforest or whatever it is, how did the flywheel teeth look? Did you do the clutch crap bypass like everyone told you?

I'm serious dude, the cars are a nightmare to work on. There hasn't been a single time that something didn't go wrong on the 99 I've worked on. Plus that 99 is cleaner than 99% of 99s on the road, there was no rost no dirt no nothing, it was still hell every single time.

I meant you about the bottom stuff, not the 99 comment.

As far as your starting problem- do you have the ring gear on the BACK of the flywheel that the CKP sensor reads off ? Without that gear in place (maybe someone took it off the original flywheel ?) the car will NOT start. The ring gear has alot of lil teeth on it, and it sits on the other side of the flywheel- not on the clutch side but on the motor side.

Check that, if you don't have it- pull the tranny out, and remove the flywheel and clutch and install the CKP ring gear off your old auto tranny flywheel on the manual tranny flywheel.

OK.....someone mentioned this earlier but the person I did the swap with assured me that this was done. He said he put a washer or gear on the crank shaft before he put the flywheel on. Now what are the symptoms of not having this little gear? My car cranks but won't start. It sounds like it wants to start but won't. Would this happen without that gear. Let me know. Thanks. Mike.

You are NOT supposed to put ANYTHING between the crankshaft and the flywheel, your flywheel is out too far if you did that and the CKP sensor is not reading the reluctor wheel (gear with teeth on the back of the flywheel) and the car will not fire up. On a 5th gen this cuts signal to the injectors and I am almost 100% sure coils too. Car will NOT fire up without that sensor- atleast the 5th gens wont.

So if i had some of you guys come by to my place for a
maxima meet at my place cough5spdswapcough (Props to tripleGmax's post back on page 1)
would payment be accepted in beer, and chips? maybe some chicken? maybe you can bring your cam corder's and i'll sacrifice my tires @ a local parking lot in your honor?

because i truly doubt me jumping up and down and giving you "hugs" would be enough... let me know .. it's just a thought (this way i can start scouting junkyards for parts)

Converting a 02-up Maxima to manual is going to take alot more than what we did here. I wouldnt be supprised if the ECU puts the car into LIMP mode and not allow you to go past 1500RPM if you remove the AT tranny out of a 3.5L.

3.0L tranny swaps are piece of cake. I've already done similar jobs in California before I wouldn't mind traveling to another state but my GF would have my nutz cut off for it

Nuts are important to have though... This would be on my 229k mile 95 ... since the current auto tranny is dying right now, slips horrifically, at times it forgets to shift and bonces off the 7.2k limiter etc.

Just hope its not too rusty under that car, or the cross member might have issues going back ON. Its a very common thing to happen on older high mile Nissans. Tys 96 was rusting out already on the radiator support where the cross member bolts up to- but all the bolts came right out without a problem at all. Biggest problem I had was I forgot my 14mm swivel socket for my impacting duty, and magnetic tray to keep my sockets and bolts in check- I swear I was looking for tools half the time just to have them right infront of my eyes. I looked pretty stupid asking 10 guys if they seen a 14mm socket, yet it was in my eye sight whole time..... duhh- and this was before we was drinkin.

Regardless I got home, dumped my heavy soiled clothes in the washer, and sat in the jacuzzi for 30 min relaxing. My woman massaged my back for like 20 min and I was passed out 5 min after I call this a normal weekend :P

Now that's the life .... No rust, NM doesn't see too much of that ... people are surprised when tehy see the udnercarriage of my car, for being 10 y/o, it still looks half way decent ...

Were you the guy that had the aftermarket flywheel?

If you take the CPS off you should be able to stick your finger in the hole and feel the teeth.. You can probly see them but probly won't have room to stick your head up there.


BTW: 5spds rule.

Congrats...and welcome to the club. Just get used to the clutch engagement point on your pedal and you should be fine. If the clutch engages when you're barely releasing the pedal, you might need to adjust it.

I release the pedal about an inch and it starts to engage. I dunno how that compares with Maximas that came from the factory with the proper transmission.

Wow...that is way too low! You probably stall your car easily, especially because you are just learning how to drive manual. Have it adjusted to go a bit higher. I remember when I had just replaced the clutch in mine, it was just as low. We had to adjust the pedal to go a little more higher to get it just right for me. I'd say adjust it another inch and see how it feels, go higher as you see fit. But engagement at mid-point of pedal is way too high and you will have problems putting your tranny in gear. Having it at 1/3 of the way seem ideal.
