I had a similar incident, blew both airbags. I haven't replaced them, just bought the interior parts to cover where they blew out so that you can't tell they were spent. The airbags are a joke. I flipped an 89 maxima at 90 miles an hour.. it had no airbags... I didn't have a scratch on my body. So don't waste ur money on them, just keep an eye open for a cheap set on e-bay, and maybe you'll luck out. I also bent my a-arm but found one at a junk yard for 40 bucks... WHat year is that car, because if you do decided to NOT fix it. I want to buy the stock tail lights from you (97-99) only. ALso anyone reading this... If you have the stock tails in a 95-99 maxima. I will trade u a brand new set of Carbon fiber ones just like these... for them. let me know jlb44@bu.edu http://www.autosportz.com/tail_light...IDKFOELSD2.jpg
reason i want this trade, is because i want to sell the car to an old man who wants the stock ones.

That is crazy that your air backs went off.... these are pics when when someone crashed into my brothers 1999 max back in 2001. Mind you this was a car he purchased new in 1999 and only have 40k when it was totaled. The airbags DID NOT DEPLOY.

Suspension stuff should be fairly inexpensive to replace. As for the airbags i would check EBay. i see then going for $300-$500. you will need both bags and the control module.

It sounds like a good car prior to the accident. Since insurance won't cover it, you are left with no alternative but to fix it. However, fix it properly and no Mickey Mouse job please.

Airbags aren't meant to help in rollovers, they are suppossed to save you from smashing your skull into the steering wheel in a head on collission. Newer airbags work more effectively than the old ones before 1998.

sorry to hear, but you know (as a mechanic or mechanically inclined) that tires must be in prestine condition in order to drive.

Since you got no insurance, I would just fix the car and get the airbags later.
See how the car drives and feels after the repair and see what you want to do witht the car. You can always sell it.

good luck
hope this helps

I'm sorry to hear about this accident 2 da max. This worries me because my tires look litererally like slicks right now.

Get the ebay control arm, hes a good seller, and product is good. Replace all that is bent/broken. When car is drivable take it to a place to check to see if the frame is bent. I'd say do this before replacing the air bags, if you find out the frame is bent then no point on continuing to fix the car, but hopefully thats not the case.

good luck.

I would be inclined to get the car towed in and determine if the frame is bent before doing all the other work.

Many times the air bags will deploy without any frame damage. The airbag deployment mechanism is connection to a MEMS comb drive capacitor, which acts as an accelerometer. Since the comb drive controlling the front air bad is made to only travel in 1 dimension (front/back), deployment from relatively minor side accidents (such as yours) should not take place. However, early MEMS comb drives were rather loose compared to those they make today, this resulted in the accidental deployment of the front airbags in less than severe side accidents. In some acceleromets this was so much so that the side force required to trigger the air bags was vastly less than the force required to trigger the air bags from frontal collisions.

keep your car. Just get it repaired and you'll be fine. Mount the new tires.

If you want a control arm just go to clearway on hillside by the clearview expressway. If i was in NY I'd let you buy it on my account for a discount. I think they sell control arms for $77 for our cars. You can get your tie rod there too. And whatever else you need. They just dont have body parts.

It must be luck of the draw or something. My 95SE is coming up to 60K and I've owned it since day 1. The only thing on your list I have had to do is replace the oil pressure sender unit about 5 months ago.

Apart from that the only things I have ever had go wrong with it are:

-replace an 02 sensor on warranty about 7 years ago
-new battery
-new headlight
-blew a sidewall out of right rear tire
- replaced both rear calipers and pads about 4 months ago, with 50% remaining on the pads. My fault for not using the parking brake for several years which resulted in right rear caliper seizing.

I am still running the original tires and NGK platinum plugs and the car runs like a champ, with the fuel economy as good as its ever been.

I just don't understand all the problems you have had at such low mileage.

thats one good thing for having a mechanic as a father
