$700 for AC compressor pump?

my gf's car (99 SE) has been making wierd sounds, so she took it some shop somewhere and they said it was the "AC compressor pump".. the part they claim is 300, it would be 2 hours labor, and then they have to recharge it which cost some other amount to complete the fix. Is this reasonable? has anyone had this problem before??? help please!

nope, not reasonable at all. do it yourself, get the part from a junkyard. charge your gf the same amount of money though and pocket the profits

You loosen the serpentine belt, remove two lines from the compressor, a connector harness, and four long 14MM bolts. Its easy basically and you access it from under the car.

I sold my compressor for 50 bucks.. For $700, that compress better be made out of gold.

I don't think any year will work. There was a discussion about this not too long ago - do some searching. There might have been a seperate discussion about compressors in the 4th Gen classifieds forum too. I am fairly sure that not all the model years are compatible (for the compressor).

when you remove the ac lines from the compressor, doesn't the R134A stuff leak out?

IIRC models with build date 6/96 (in other words MY1997) have a different part# for there A/C compressors vs. models built before 6/96.

If u were around my area i would of hooked u up...its not that hard ...and yes the all that stuff will leakout like a spray can. the question is do u bring it to a shop so they can refill it "right" or try to refill it urself? I believe it is 3-4 lbs.
