Here's the general idea (I haven't done his myself).

1. Pop out the back seat - there are two plastic tabs on the underside - pull on them and the seat pops out.
2. Remove the fuel pump cover plate
3. Remove old pump, replace with new
4. Replace cover plate
5. Replace rear seat.

You might want to unplug the fuel pump fuse as a precaution - it is in the fuse panel under the steering column.

Yes. Buying a haynes manual will be one of the best purchases you make for your car. Before you tackle this though, be sure to relieve the fuel pressure first. You don't want gas squirting everywhere.

How are you so sure that it's your fuel pump that's keeping your car from running? There are many different possibilities. Have you tried changing the fuel filter?

So what are your exact symptoms? Crank but no start? Any codes at all?

Did you check the fuel pump fuse?

Did you check for fuel pressure after the filter? That would be an easy way to check if the pump is indeed working or not.

So the car cranks but doesn't fire...

A fuel pressure guage is not that expensive... you might want to try to get hold of one to make sure the fuel pump is indeed the problem. Fuel pumps aren't cheap.

There maybe something in the stickies on a how to, if not, check the members list and look up MardiGrasMax, he has a write up on his home page. Check the fuse before you go to changing that, I've never really heard of them going out but I know it can happen. You just don't want to change it and still have it not start.

BTW you can listen for the fuel pump to energize the first couple of seconds that the key is on the "on" position... or use the squeeze the fuel line trick to see if there is pressure.

He told me through AIM that he checked for spark and there was no pattern to it. It was just random and erratic. That points to either the crank position sensors or the cam position sensor. He checked the cam sensor and the CPS (REF) and they checked out good. The only thing left is the CPS (POS). This is not a fuel issue. This is a timing issue.

nismology - you may be right.... he says he replaced on crank sensor and checked the other...

mxzmax:
What code did you have (for crank sensor) and which one POS or REF did you replace?

Well you replaced the right sensor for the 0407 code - CPS REF... i.e. the one on the passenger side near the oil pressure sender...

As Nismology said, it might still be a CPS issue - you might have a faulty CPS POS sensor (the one in the transmission housing).

You buy the fuel pump you'll be wasting your money. Fuel pumps don't go completely bad until way after 200k miles unless you have a bad habit of running the fuel level extremely low for extended periods of time. You said you got intermittent spark with no pattern to it. This is a timing issue. I would use all 3 timing sensors from your friends car, cam position sensor, and both crank position sensors. Transfer those to your car and see if it starts. If it does, remove one at a time and replace it with one of yours to narrow it down. If it doesn't, it might be a compounded problem. But try that for now and get back to us.
