150,xxx k and still goin strong! Shifts are a bit abrupt jus after startup when cold, but quickly smoothen out ~1 min. later. Like every1 else here says, the trick is to change the tranny fluid about every 30-35k or so.

I recently had mine changed 4 the 1st time since I owned the car 4 ~2 years now, & made the switch to Mobil1 synthetic atf. Boy was I worried @ first, but a couple Nissan techs & independent auto shops advised me that I should be fine makin the switch to synthetic so late. So I did & haven't had a problem since.

Lemme tell you, a scare like that will put hairs on your ****!!! lol

Go Nissan! Good luck!

Currently have 104,000 miles on my auto trans without any problems. Fluid has been changed every 30,000 miles. I agree with an earlier post -- the auto trans are made for DRIVING, not for racing.

154,000 and still doing fine. Change fluid when needed. My old Ford (that I put 261,000 miles on) was on its third tranny by this time.

Mine is meh, 125k, it needs a flush. It makes really weird noises idling in drive, hesitates a bit in first, but other than that it works. Waiting for death.

111,000 still like new. Can't say that for other items on the car, I've been replacing sensors and crap. But when it's running properly I can still burn the tires into second.

Speaking of things lasting

I just bought a 95 GXE with 232,000 miles on it. ALL highway miles from orlando to miami. Honestly how long do you guys see maxima engines lasting??? Think I am good for another 30k ? Nothing leaks and the engine bay is spotless. Tranny shifts magnificently.

just rounded 111k, trannys running strong, but since i purchased at 99k, it hesitates sometimes to downshift @ 60+. also at a "rolling stop" it doesn't downshift into first sometimes. It's really tricky sometimes. It shifts like crap in the rain, At high RPM acceleration in 1st it shifts hard into second "sometimes". like i said its wicked touchy, but you learn to love it.

There are quite a few threads out there on how long people's automatics are lasting. Everything can be summed up as follows: If you change your fluid regularly and don't do stupid stuff like neutral drops, your transmission will last the life of the car. You could change the name of the thread to "Automatics with over 200K...step in" and you'd still have a lot of guys here, myself included. I'm coming up on 220,000 and while I will forever be wishing I could afford a 5-speed, the auto is holding up well.

Our transmissions are known for this. The rolling stop thing is annoying...sometimes mine tries to start in third gear if I roll though at 5mph, and it feels uncomfortable. The 1-2 shift is the roughest shift of all on all 4th gen Maximas and it's the worst when the car is cold. Somehow, like you said, you learn to love it. Anyway, kil2board, welcome to Maxima.org! How are things in Swansea? I get up that way every now and then, I have friends in Fall River and Somerset.

nissan240sxdriv, welcome to the org!
If the car is in good shape, it'll last you more than just another 30k. The VQ is easily a 300,000 mile engine. Things to look out fr in a '95 are the timing chain guides and tensioners, they are sometimes troublesome in very early VQ30DE's with high mileage. I also suggest changing your tranny fluid.

You are worried about getting another 30,000 out of a Maxima with 230,000? NO PROBLEM. I figured that when I traded a Ford I put 261,000 on for a Maxima, I ought to be able to get at LEAST another 100,000 above that out of a Nissan. I'm at 156,000 miles now, and a happy camper (even after I just spent $$$ for a knock sensor replacement and a new antenna) .

I heard someone describe their high mileage car as "on the way back from the moon" (which would be 240,000). You're almost at that point now. Here's to the return trip!

216k and running well. Changed tranny fluid once around 120k. Ran her hard fairly often up until 200k. Been tak'n it easy on her since then, but still put da peddle to the metal about once a week. No redline stuff, just some good ol spirited 4k rpm bliss every now and then.

Our cars rock.

Just a thought, for you guys who have had transmission failures - can you tell us what about the transmission failed? Perhaps one of the planetary gears? the clutch bands? the lockup clutch on the torque converter?

If you don't know, that's understandable. Few people change the transmission themselves and then tear down the old one for failure analysis. Few transmission shops give a detailed report to their customers on what exactly happened, because most customers don't know or care. If you do happen to know, please pass it on.

I observed something tonight....

I was on my way home from a get together and I used my stopwatch to time my 0-60 time and for some reason with and without torque braking I got times from 8.08 being the best and 8.8 being the worst. With overdrive on and off. For some reason if I turn overdrive off it revs to 6500 rpms in 1st gear then shifts to second {automatic} and the revs drop to 3k and stay there for a second then for some reason it drops me back into 1st like there was more to offer from the lower gear. All with my foot to the floor. I read a post where someone got a time of 6.7 with there 1995 gxe auto , which I have the same model. I am wondering how I can achieve this time ??!?? All help would be greatly appreciated.
-Just I side note I beat a 2005 Infinity G35 Auto Sedan today from 0-50 then it beat me but from a dig at a green light I got it YAYAYAYAY.
-Sorry to be off topic guys but this was really stumping me!

Just turned 99k today in my 98 SE.....was flying at 80-90 mph on the Mass Pike today, and the trans shifts smoothly with no problems. My friend's old '89 SE trans died at 240k...think it all depends on maintenence. A good rule of thumb is to do a trans flush every 30k as part of that service interval. I'ave heard from soem mechanics that changing tranny fluid in an older car is like opening up Pandora's Box, ....That sounds hard to believe. The best prevention to any mechanical failure is proper maintenence...simply put.

213k miles...its starting to slip only when its cold and you release the gas really quickly, it just dies...hehe people look at me weird sometimes when im trying to get out of the stop sign and im just rolling and pumping the gas to catch the gear...Once it is warmed up it's perfect. The car was bought(dad) back in 95 with 23k miles. I changed the fluid around 200k miles. It was really low and slipping like a mad man.

Sounds like you're on borrowed time. Start looking around for new/used/rebuilt transmissions now. Good luck, dude.

Hey guys, been carefully reading this thread and though its long has some interesting info. I'm watching a 98 GLE on EBAY with 221k and its an auto.
I'm a little nervous about bidding on it. Its tough to tell how it was maintained though it looks great aside of the heated seat switch and radio missing a few buttons.

We're due for twins to arrive in Feb and was looking at that Max as a "baby beater". The real "baby hauler" will be my 01 AE. I'm probably going to let my Prelude go in the spring.

Check that Max out and provide comments...I'm very interested to hear what you all have to say.

OK, I think I will win the High Mile contest and set many peoples minds at ease. I just got back from taking a long over due vacation over the holidays. In my travals from FL to IA and back I just turned over 297,000 miles and change. The motor and tranny are both original and both still run like a top. My car is not totally babied either. Just use you head and not be totally stupid and an auto Max will last a LONG LONG time.

My car also has about 300lbs of extra weight do to the full custom system plus luggage for two for over two weeks on the road and the darn thing still get about 27 MPG even though the mountains. You cant beat that.
