Anyone ever try Lucas transmission additive??? It supposedly helps slipping, and can be used as preventive maintenance.. Not recommending it, just seeing if anyone has any experience with it..

automatic trans

I have 266,000 miles on my 97se. The original automatic trans and engine are still holding on. The trans slips a little bit but is still ticking. I have to admit though, I didn't regularly change the trans fluid like I did the oil. Since I had the car (bought it used with 46k miles in Sept 99) I have only changed the trans fluid twice............ Who knows, but I am not complaining. I have definitely gotten my money's worth!

i have 127,000 and drive my car almost 500 miles a week. I flush my tranny with nissan matic d tranny fluid every 30,000-40,000 miles. You can always tell when it is time to change you fluid by checking the dip stick. Take a napkin and drop a liitle tranny fluid on it and see if it doesn't spread or looks dark in color.

Just past the 100k mark about a week ago and tranny seems fine. Still able to chirp into 2nd due to DR Mod.

P.S. Get yourself an auxillary tranny oil cooler and your tranny will love you for it.

I have a 95 Max with 160k and a 96 Max with 130k and so far, no problems with the tranny at all, knock wood. Never changed the fluid on either. My wife was driving the 96 up until recently, so it has had it easy. I drive the 95 pretty hard.

I used it and it did nothing. Mine may have been so far gone that it wouldnt matter either way though.

Gents,
Can't believe knowone mentioned using a tranny oil cooler. I got 3-max's, 2-3rd gen and a 4th gen. After replacing a trans in a 3rd gen I got a real education on transmissions especially front wheel drives. The fluid gets hotter than motor oil. Everybody do yourself a favor and add an oil cooler. They're about $35 and will save you big money. Run Amsoil or Redline ATF and you should be good for another 200K The trans shop that rebuilt my trans says any front wheel drive, especially mini-vans, is on borrowed time after about 110K. Looking around his lot at the vintage of cars that needed rebuilds made me a believer. Just about everyone on the 3rd gen forum with an auto is running a trans cooler.

I bought mine used about 2 months ago with 220k. I thought the tranny was dead because of the bucking. I found out it was a bad coil and now that the problem is fixed the car runs amazingly smooth(Finger crossed).

Google is your friend. I have the Hayden Model 405. Took about an hour to install. There is a write up in the stickies.

I've got under 54,000 miles on mine it shifts fine but a couple of times this week I gun it and I get a slight hesitation; I think it's the gas though.

About the transmission cooler, it's worth the money. I bought the biggest one Jegs sold still waiting to install it. I think deezo also has a huge one installed he probably has a better idea of if too big would be a problem. I wouldn't think so.

Auto Zone, Pep Boy's etc. You don't need a bil one. It's plumbed in series with the cooler built into the radiator. Be sure you get an extra length of line. There's a how-to on the 3rd gen forum that explains the installation process. Expect to pay about $35.

145K, I just noticed when I am riding along at about 40mph it wants to drop into 4th gear and there is some slippage/bucking/thumping noise. So what I do is keep the overdrive off until I hit about 55-60mph and all is well. Other than thateverything is fine.
Anyone else have this problem?

95,000 runs like it should. One complain only: 4th gen TCM shift logic is not as good as the one on 2002 maximas.

around 129K and here is what I found out today on the tranny. First, service engine soon light came up when I started the engine. I think it's stuck at 2nd gear or something cuz it barely hit 70 today when I was coming home from work and when I let off gas, the rpm just drops all the way down and rpm only goes up to 4 from what I remember. My car starts really slow from the stop like it has no power. I dunno if I should take it to the tranny shop tomorrow or pull out the codes before the shop. Can someone tell me if it's time for the new tranny or not?

I have a Hayden tranny cooler, and it's been working fine. However, since my car had been sitting in a body shop for 7 weeks this past summer, I noticed it shifts hard between 1st and 2nd. Should I change the transmission kit or get a flush? I currently have 153k on the max. I'm not the original owner of the car, but last time I did a flush was around 120k and tranny fluid was drained and refilled when the tranny cooler was installed. The fluid is still pink.

I just bought my neighbor's 1996 with 178,000 miles. All original except for one caliper has been replaced. It runs great so far. My biggest fear is the tranny. Thanks for the advice on the cooler!

123 k. I'm middle of the road (for trans flush). Once a year is too often and a waste of $. Never isn't often enough. I do it every couple of years.

I have 112K and it shifts a little harsh sometimes out of 1st. I bought the car from a grandma at 90K. This transmission is going to last . I need to start driving it like I stole it because this tranny HAS to croak.

OH NO DAD!!! MY TRANS IS DEAD!!! I AM PRETTY SURE A 5SPD TRANS IS CHEAPER!!! YES I WILL PAY HALF!!!

98 Max GXE ~188,000 miles. Drive it every day, never any trouble with the tranny. As a matter of fact, the ONLY repair i've ever done on this car is replace a faulty 02 sensor and routine maintenance..........

I have 215,000 on my car with the original transmission. It was running great until I went too fast in 3rd gear. Has anyone here experienced this type of problem:

When the shifter is in 1, 2, or 3 (D with O/D off)
-Gasing the pedal the car drives fine and shifts fine
-Releasing the pedal, the rpm dips and there's a high speed clicking sound.
-Gasing it again the car drives and shifts fine and there's no jerking at all.

Basically, the problem comes when I let go of the gas. When I have the shifter on D(OD On) the car drives like there were no problems with it.

Thanks for any input.
