Few questions regarding the rear main seal

I went to the dealer and they told me that there was a leak in the rear main seal.
The dealership is going to charge me 850 bucks + tax not sure about the labor but yea.

So my question is...
1 What are the steps the fix this.
2 What kind of tools will I need...
3 What parts will I have to buy?
4 How much time is it going to take?
5 Should I just get it done at the stealership?
6 Should I go to another dealership and have them check it out?
7 Any other precautions I should take?
8 How does did this happen?

If they are going to charge you $850, that better include a new factory clutch and flywheel resurfacing. Don't settle for the "Key Value" clutch either...

Oops! Can't say I know what a fair price is then. Is the leak really bad? How much oil are you adding per 3000 miles? If it's not a lot and you don't get an oil puddle on the ground, I would hold off getting it fixed. I'm actually surprised your 98 is already leaking...

Yeah me to...Me and BlackMaxima Think that they are just saying that to me to have spend money, and try to **** me over. ARGH!!! So for the most part I will just wait it out.

As for oil leaks. I don't think I have any. I have my car parked in the garage and I don't notice anything on the ground when I leave. So....yea

Have a look under your car where the trans is bolted to the engine at the base there see if you can see any oil & muck, a sign of a leak, how ever slight

Taken advantage, get the brakes done. Do them yourself...

My rear main has been leaking for over a year. The only time I notice is when I'm changing the oil... there is a little oil on the edge of the trans. It does not drip, and I never have to add oil. I'm not doing anything to it until it until is starts making a mess in the driveway. My advise would be keep an eye on it, and wait until it is more of a problem than oil on the bellhousing to repair it.
