Don't tell me to go to Edmunds or bluebook or whatever, I already did and I know most people do NOT buy their cars for bluebook values or anything advertized as trade-in value or private party value....

I want to know what you guys think I should pay for a 97 Black GXE, 57k miles, the guy says he maintained it well, extended warranty, tranny replaced in october by the dealer. New tires, clean.. blah blah blah... He is asking 12 grand but said, "go to edmunds and check the private seller value, and that's what I am asking" that is around 11-12k depending on condition. My brother knows the guy and he wouldn't want to screw him, so I want to know what is a fair or good amount to pay for it? Anyone buy a Max recently? How much did you pay?
I'm thinking of offering 10.5k and working up to 11 or so, not more.... What do you guys think?

thanks..

Why a new tranny at 57K, doesn't that make you wonder how the car was cared for?

He CLAIMS he maintained it well... He was also amazed when the tranny crapped out, I remember 2-3 months ago my bro told me he was all surprised and stuff, and that was before he decided to sell it.... Another thing that bugs me is the fact he just bought a new Firebird or Trans AM, whatever that POS is called.. hmm, likes speed I guess eh?
But even if he did occasional beating on it, if the tranny is new, which it is, and the price is good, along with cosmetics and some maintenence was done.. should I maybe follow this deal through and see if I can get it?

I also wanted a manual before, but my dad doesn't want to lend me $$$ for the 5spd, because he thinks I'll beat on it, but he knows I won't beat on the auto because he knows I'm still financially traumatized from rebuilding the auto on my 93 SE

I agree with BrianV, dont't buy it. Having the transmission replaced at 57K is a red flag. Not to mention that transmission problems will be the most costly to fix. I would keep looking around.

Like everyone else said............

Why the hell is the tranny being replaced? I wouldn't trust this deal at all. Go with your gut. Good luck.

hmm

Ok, I see everyones point on the tranny being replaced... But, there are people in the 5th gen forum who have replaced their auto tranny's allready and it hasn't probably been 20k miles.. Ofcourse it's quite possible the "hard driving" had something to do with it. The whole idea is, my brother basically knows the owner well, he has rode in that car before, sees that the guy takes care of his cars, it is weird that it failed, but I thought it could be a good oportunity. It's just that we know the owner, and he can be trusted, plus the tranny is NEW, replaced by dealer under warranty, car wasn't modded at all, except for a CD headunit, very clean, mostly highway from New Jersey. I don't see why 1 problem could be a reason not to check it out, especially when it is fixed already, and the car has an extended warranty up to either 70 or 100k, i'm not sure. Is it easy to find another 4th gen with an extended warranty, new tranny, and an owner I basically know something about? I dunno guys, I appreciate your imput though.

hmmm

My take on it? You seem rather defensive to others thoughts on the new tranny---I agree with them. There are plenty out there that don't have/had tranny problems. Being that you are so defensive of the idea that the car might be bad---buy it! It sounds like you like it a lot, so what's holding you back?!

also you dont know if the car was modded or not. He could take all the mods off. New tranny is not a good sign, go with somebody else. Maximas are not hard to find

new tranny or not.. the price is still high.. i just saw a post the other day 97 5spd SE ($10k w/ 60k miles), 98 5spd SE ($12k w/ 70k miles) that price is way too high for a 97 GXE .. i bought mine about 5 months ago 97 5spd GXE ($10k with 45k miles)

http://www.autotrader.com - thats where i found mine

I would be weary with a new tranny so soon. My biggest concern would be the odometer was tampered with. I haven't heard of Maxima auto trannys going so soon but anything can happen. Did you check carfax? See if the mileage was put on consistently each year. Any sudden decrease in mileage can indicate the odo was rolled. Ask the seller for service reciepts to prove the mileage is correct. There are so many maximas available out there, don't focus on any one too hard.

Keep in mind the 5th gen guys who got a new tranny are under powertrain warranty until 60k miles. You would be also, but that's 3k miles away. Do you want to take that kind of financial risk with a suspect car? I say keep looking.

thanks..

I just saw a Gold 96 GLE at Cambridge Nissan today for under $9000. It's here in MA but I think its a good deal. You can use the rest of your money to mod it.
