Bose stereo buttons broken, can I use a non-bose?
Bose stereo buttons broken, can I use a non-bose?
I have a 95 maxima with a bose stereo system. The lights no longer work (I saw the guide to fix them) and now the buttons sometimes are failing to work (I couldn't find anything on this).
Anyone have any suggestions to fixing it? And if this isn't possible are there different replacement stereos I can buy to replace it?
I hate this b/c I have a 400$ head unit I'd like to use but I think I would need to replace all the speakers? (best buy said this, not sure if it was a sales pitch or whatever)
Please advise!
Thanks!
Josh

Check the Audio Section FAQs... the short answer is you can use a non-bose head unit but need an adapter to use the Bose speakers/amp. The adapter is availble from a lot of places (crutchfield for example) for about 50 bucks.
You can also just buy a working used headunit (Bose) and swap it in. They go for 70-120 bucks typically on Ebay and in the classifieds section.

I paid only $20 at my local stereo shop for the adapter. One of many places to find it is crutchfield, or any of your local stereo shops. Don't believe the salesmen, most of them them don't know ****.

Like I said, I ordered from a local stereo shop. I told them I was installing a Kenwood DDX-8017, and needed the adapter so I wouldn't have to cut the OEM plugs off. Here's a pic of what it looks like. You have to get an adapter with the RCA's in order to keep the audio signal at line level when going with an aftermarket deck. Also, you better make sure your aftermarket deck has both front and rear RCA speaker connects. The wrapper for the adapter is at home. I can get a model number off of it if you want. LMK.
Just to eliminate any confusion... what you see plugs into the OEM plugs. Then I plugged the Kenwood wiring harnesses into the back of the Kenwood deck, and wired it up. The RCA's you see plug directly into the back of the Kenwood deck. Veeeery simple.

Any Bose unit from 95-99 will fit (plugs/harness are exactly the same). I would recommend getting a 99 - all these units fail eventually. The newer the unit you buy, the longer it will last (most likely) before it too stops working properly.
