Overdrive doesnt kick in, light flashes wildly when pressed

The other day, i was driving on the highway and needed to slow down quickly, and just to be on the safe side, i sometimes use my O/D off to held downshift and decelerate quicker, or use it to really pass someone fast, but when i kicked in the buttom, it didnt go into the O/D off, but instead kinda "knocked" around and would flash on, off, on, off, and not in any consistent pattern, just wildly with no control whatsoever. So for now, i have no O/D off option . Im jus trying to wonder what the hell can be causing this? ECU problem is only thing i can think of? has to be an electrical problem, but anyone else ever ran into something like this

There is a self-test in the fsm that you could run. try looking in the stickies for the proceedure.

I have the fsm on cd and was trying to copy the pages to my hard drive so I could emil it to you but adobe keeps freezing up on me. if i ain't f***ing with my cars, its the damn computer.

I always wondered if using the O/D button to much would **** something up. Well you answered my question. Thanks and hope you get it fixed.
