tranny out the door?

tranny out the door?
When I'm driving my car, it shifts jerkily. When I pull up to a red and make a complete stop i can take my foot off the gas and the car wont move (rpms stay normal), then when i stepped on the gas the rpms reved up a little (up to about 2.7-3k) and the car peeled out.. This problem didnt start until today, and i've had the parking break on for more than 24 hours. Also its been raining for like 2 weeks straight but I don't know if that makes a difference. So is it possible the transmission is going down the crapper or that the rear breaks are sticking because after about 15 minutes of driving i heard a loud squeek and it started driving fine again.. thanks

IF it is the trans do some shopping. I am looking at $2000 (Chicago) for a independent to rebuild incl. a torque converter. Nissan will install a factory rebuilt (ALL NEW parts inside an old case) for $3200. (I did not get the specifis on a warranty for the Nissan rebuilt). Some independents were as high as Nissan to rebuild "as needed". So do shop around.

how many miles on the car? have you ever changed the trans fluid? check the dipstick, is it dark? smell like burnt rubber? if so - flush the tranny. first make sure the fluid level is correct. check it HOT, in park, car running. dipstick has hot and cold marks, so use the right ones.

Automatics have several clutches. Read on: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automa...nsmission5.htm

yea that happened in the civic i had before i bought my max, the first gear clutch, deep inside the automatic tranny, somehow ended up pretty fried so the engine would rev up as the transmission slipped and then the car would take off when it finally caught,
i never fixed it because it wouldve required going into the tranny, not worth it with a new car just a few months down the road, but any fix will probably require opening up the tranny

Then why did you say that he doesn't have one because he has automatic....now you are admitting auto's do have clutches. You misunderstood what I said miserably. Last time I checked, this is not an english grammar class. We all should know what we are talking about in here by now.

The way you posted sounded like you were suggesting it was his clutch as in 5spd manual clutch and flywheel. If you meant one of the many clutches in an automatic transmission you should've said "it could be one of the cluthes in the transmission" to avoid just this sort of confusion.

so if its the clutch slipping how expensive would this be to repair, i dont want to spend more than a thousand, considering theres about 2 grand of hidden problems that havent been fixed on the car yet. Does it progressively get worse as time goes by because I can drive it the way it is now, ive kind of figured out how much gas i have to apply to move from a stand still without peeling out, it does this on every stop now, but when im moving it picks up fine, it just shifts really hard

someone in this thread suggested adding tranmission fluid, i guess i can give that a shot if it worked for them, im just fed up with this problem.. is there any specific type of transmission fluid or can i add any to my existing?
