You don't need to take the wodd pieces out on order to install the aluminum kit. The kit just lays over your factory pieces with an adhesive bond. I'm actually planning on getting an aluminum kit and I'm thinking about getting the same one you are. I helped out another Org member by trading him my wood pieces for his black ones since my the pieces would be covered anyway when I receive my kit. So you don't have to remove your wood pieces, you need them to apply the kit.

Well, I too have(had) a GLE with the FAKE, cheesey plastic "wood". It bothered me so much, I ordered a real wood kit. As for the new pieces overlaying the old ones, they in fact do, however, you can still see the old pieces ever so slightly in certain spots. For this reason, I bought all new black plastic pieces (that come on the SE and GXE) and replaced all my fake wood first. It's up to you but it bothered me enough to do that despite the expense and that's putting wood on wood! You are putting aluminum on wood so, in my opinion, you have to do something first. Even if you just pull out the fake wood panels and spray paint them first. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any questions once you're installing your kit.
