I have a 98 auto max and everytime i turn the key to start the car, there's a loud screeching noise and then the car will start. The car still starts everytime, but there's always that noise. I've checked for codes and there wasn't any.

Umm... Does the screach happen before the engine actually runs, if so then it's the starter thats going bad. Common with 4th gens...

 

I checked the belts and nothing was wrong. njmaxseltd, i think you are right. How far can i go until replacement and will this cause any further damage to anything else because i just spent money on replacing the alternator and i'm about to replace to the sparkplugs also so i don't have the money to buy a new starter. my car currently has 78,xxx miles.

 

It's also quite possible that it might be a little dried up in there and simply needs to be re-greased instead of replaced. (if the noise happens during or after start up, not before)

 

i get that same noise, i wanna regrease it but the write make it seem hard so i am having second thoughts I HATE THAT ****ING NOISE!!!!!

 

is it the starter's noise? both remans i've had, had those wierd noise. sometimes it'll start sweet. and normal. other times it'll screech like heck.

 

Holy shiet...I had the exact same problem at the exact same miles. I had my belts, starter, and AC compressor replaced...now my car is as smooth as butter

recommand you to fix it soon...your car won't start one day...like what happened to mine...calling AAA is not fun!

 

i had the same problem with my starter... and i just put it off because the car was starting as usual even with the sound until recently

my car started to have trouble catching the engine when i turned the ignition, so i decided to finally get the starter replaced. sound is gone. see if that helps

 

i beleive your referring to the dying duck noise. After the car actually starts is when u hear the noise if so its the starter.

 

im having the same problem i just replaced my starter, so i think it might be a belt, there is this loud screeching noise that doesnt seem to go away (it happens when i start the car and while i am driving) and now my car just started to smoke as i got home tonight. What do i do??? Im hoping its a belt and that is it.
