Pulley Tensioner: Belts.

Hello:

I recently replaced the belts in my car (both of them), but now the car makes this high-pitch, metal grinding noise. I took it back and the mechanic said said I need to replace the pulley (which apply tention to the belt).

The car is a 97 se, with 112,000 miles.

Does this seem reasonable? It was not making that sound before, but the mechanic said the new belts are more firm and therefore put more preassure on the pulley, that's why it's louder now. However, I normally hear it when I start it and it last for about 1-2 minutes, then it's quited.

Have any of you guys changed that part after replacing the serpentine belts?
prices? etc.

thanks.

I think my tensioner is also making noise. I thought it was the supercharger idler pulley so I replaced it but the noise was still there. I can't imagine it being more than 1/2 hour of labor + the part. My car is basically the same as yours: 1997 SE with 118,000 miles.

The pulley might be loose. If not it should be cheap and fast job.

Just got it done. Paid $55 at the dealer (I couldn't wait for the shipping) and I paid $25 to my mechanic. I guess it was not too bad, but if I had a little extra time I could have done it my self, plus save a little on the part.

I notice I need to replace a couple of this, ... go figure, more money. Oh well, I'll start a nother post.

thanks for the responses.
