Porting The Intake Manifold

Has anyone actually done this?

I know this isn't "All Motor" but I have a 1996 A32 4th Gen SMX and this is definitely where I'll get the most 4th Gen owners viewing.

As far as I can tell - no one makes aftermarket bolt-on intake manifolds for the 4th Gen (or any) Maxima. Exhaust and headers sure - but throttle bodies and intake manifolds; not on your life sonny...

So porting is my only option - but before I take the plunge, has anyone actually done this or considered seriously doing this and done research etc?

Cheers guys,
PHAT6

extrude honing upper intake manifold
http://www.extrudehone.com/

throttle body
http://www.maxbore.com/

i forget the other link that does TB porting.

several people have port/polished their tb's but sadly enough there is not much more you can do, as for as the upper intake manifold it can be extruded honed and a few have done it, but its just not a popular option considering its around $600-650 US, and with the Mevi, and OOVI swaps being a better option. if you have a place that you can get it done for a good price, then why not ?

you have an smx maxima? I thought those didnt go into production. If you do you would be supercharged if im not misstaken. SMX maximas get suspension upgrades, brakes upgraded, supercharger, exhaust upgraded and the smx (stillen) body kit. Which is on my car.

The Maxima's 3.0-liter dohc 24-valve V6 was already a competent powerplant in the Maxima SE, good enough for 190 hp and a 7.1 sec run to 60 mph. After a little massaging from Stillen, the Maxima's time improved to 6.7 sec. In 1997 Stillen revised the suspension and equipped the SMX with a Vortech supercharger, adding a total of 90 hp to the stock SE. Acceleration times improved to 5.9 sec and the total cost for the modifications remained below $10K. The suspension upgrades include an adjustable rear anti-roll bar, Stillen progressive rate springs which lower the car by 1.25 inches and front and rear strut tower braces. P235/45ZR17 Yokohama tires mounted on 17 inch Momo wheels also come standard. The supercharger is a $3599 option and produces 6.5 pounds of boost. Add to that all of the other Stillen goodies including an aero body kit, 13 inch Brembo front disks, some funky graphics and the price for a new Maxima SE (in 1998) and you're still looking at a very reasonable price of about $30+K.

IIRC one person dynoed and it shifted the powerband to the right with minimal max gains..
IMO.

ProFlow also does nice work but sounds more expensive than maxbore.

No, it's a commonly held belief that all SMX Maximas (I wish!) had the Stillen centrifugal supercharger in it - it just isn't the case mate.

Suspension and brake upgrades, lowered 25mm, FTSB, POD filter (popcharger), increased the compression I think with different cams (that's what the guys who made the NZ SMX Maximas said) as well as a stainless steel rear muffler extension, high fow cat and urethane body kit. Not to mention stamping Stillen SMX and the build no. by the shifter and in the engine bay.

No supercharger bro. If it was - I'd go for an intercooled Eaton supercharger (modified Roots) no lag like the centrifugal supers have...just like turbos but belt driven.

Thanks Caesar - when will you know about the meet?

Can you do both - I mean port and get VI?

Yeah post pics I'd like to see all the differences, especially the stamp with the car # on it. Also I find the high compression and cams item hard to believe, but it would of course be extremely cool if it were true.

Keven97SE dynod his extrudehoned USIM (what we call the USIM because it is what came on maximas in the united states) and got nice gains throughout the powerband. MEVI and 00vi are alternate manifolds you can use rather than the stock one, 00vi being the better of the two but also the more difficult to install.

I don't know how to post on this site - but I'm on cardomain under "kiwiphat6"
- SEARCH under "Nissan / Maxima / New Zealand". My car is the dark green one with heaps of intro writing about my mods etc.

Or try this: www.putfile.com/phat6 : my car is PHAT6-1 and PHAT6-2 (only movies of me driving around Auckland at night (as well as some other car videos I've selected.

NMEXMAX: it's what someone else said to me and I didnt judge his comment -go post somewhere else mate. Your incessant doubt and insults are tiresome bud.

I'll get some video and photos posted early in the new year boys. MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a safe, peaceful New Years - you too NMEXMAX, sorry about the fingers mate.

He could have been wrong about the compression and cams, but since I'm no mechanic I wasn't going to tell him he was wrong. I hope he's wrong because if it does have higher comp/cams then I'm slow...

The only thing I don't like on that is the front grille. Other than that, it's hot.

Looks as if you have equal length headers, a la cattman, but the collectors do not look cattmanish, only the equal length piece under the oil pan.

How much were those headers and how come you don't have VI? Nice car by the way. Love the color. Also what is the factory redline?

Thankys guys. New Zealand new Maximas didn't come out with MEVI until the 5th gens were released in early 2000 - they came out with the 00VI system (which is apparently much better).

I like the front grille (all blacked out in the same colour) but that's just me.

The extractors/headers cost me $1,100NZD (about $800USD) with the Y-pipe, Flexi-Joint and labour.

Bad.

I ran 16.282s in my first run and 16.65s in my second - that's slower than stock!

To make things worse - I ran against a 350 V8-powered Daihatsu or Toyota pick-up (14.2s) and then against a supercharged LS2 (10.8s)...

It's like I was standing still. Hoping to get better numbers when I run in a month's time.

Hey Mitch, yeah I'm going with 00VI if I can find it bro. Then high-stall, VB mod and maybe a ECU piggyback and try and run sub-15.

The track was at 1400ft above sea level and there were terrible cross and head winds - untried track, never been used before.

SHHH ...yes...he had a bad run and I think the CPU f***ked the times as well - the day turned into a farce when the timing CPU packed up and wouldn't work. So we couldn't DYO or even get times printed out - just heads up.

Yeah, that's fair - I'll go heads up against a 600bhp supercharged 6.0 Litre V8with an enormous bonnet scoop poking out (you'd think he was compensating for something...hmm...what d'ya reckon?)
