Auto Tranny troubles

Hey guys. The auto tranny in the 99 max is shifting a little rough and seems to be indecisive at times. The car has 86,000 miles on it and I did a tranny tune up at about 40,000 miles. Would it be a good idea to do my next tune up now and maybe add some synthetics made to offer smoother shifting? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

What was done during the tranny tune up? It was a long time ago so maybe it is due another tune up. I think a simple ATF fluid flush may be enough. You can use Nissan ATF fluid (safe bet) or Mobil-1 ATF (my favorite).

Can you give us a little more detail on how it's acting?

There is no such thing as a tranny tune up for our cars, per say. The only thing you can do is change or flush the fluid. Maybe pull the pan down and clean the magnets on the bottom and check the screen for any contamination. A flush and change over to synthetic transmission fluid does make the auto shift much better in the cold mornings and when it's really hot. I recommend Amsoil transmission fluid.

Yea sorry, meant a tranny flush. In terms of how it is acting: The 1-2 shift, isn't smooth, gives a harder shift than normal. When I mean that it seems to be indecisive is that it changes between 3 and OD quite often and seems to struggle to find what gear to downshift to when giving it a little more gas. And I am assuming that the synthetic ATF will be better than the normal one from what njmaxseltd wrote, is this correct? Thanks.

At this time I can not start my own thread, so please accept my apology for this question. I own a 1996 max with a automatic, when I shift into park the car start rollin backwards and I can hear a "grinding nosie". Is my tranny going bad or what? BTW the car has a 124k.

Change the shift solonoids on the valve body. I changed mine at about 90,000 miles. The cost for them is about $ 210.00 for the parts.

The park pin is either broken or not seating correctly. To fix it, your tranny will have to come out and apart. Just use your ebrake and don't let it roll.

Well 46k miles in between auto tranny services is alot. Have the tranny fluid flushed every 25-30k to keep it fresh and you should have a longer life out of it.

So suggestions center around a tranny flush, and checking to see if the valve body selonoids need replacing?

First things first, MaxAndy.......by a process of elimination.. do the easiest, most cost-effective, and obvious things first. Do the tranny flush first, if things done improve, then go to the next most probable thing that it can be. Regardless of the problem, the ATF needs to be changed anyways.
