CV replacments

both cv boots are blown and the nissan dealer strongly suggested replacing both axels. i think i have to agree due to how long the boots have been blown.

now, i dont feel like paying $160 per axel, so i want to go buy them myself from like.. Napa.(or whatever major car parts store i need to goto)

what exactly will i need to buy to take into the nissan dealer or a third party mechanic. if i buy the axel, does it come with a boot? what all do i need to save myself time and money here.

i cant do it myself, i lack time, experience, and tools. i'd rather a shop do it so i can blame them if it turns out bad.

thanks guys!

You could buy the parts and then try to find someone to install them. Maybe there is a Maxima owner in CA that would help you out. Just buy them from Autozone or something like that.

Yes, when you buy an axle it comes complete, even so if you have your old ones out of the car you can use yours as cores. Most importantly make sure you know if your car is equipped with ABS or not. Try autozone, make sure you have your cores! It will run you about $200 or less including tax for both axles if you have cores. Easy to do if you are willing to DIY. Lack of knowlegde doesn't subsitute for errors.

my car is still intact. i just need to go buy the axels and then wherever i take it can figure the rest out

i just dont have the tools, place, or time to do it myself, otherwise i would!

so just go pick up 2 axels at autozone/napa/jim-bobs auto parts and that will do?

i didnt think 95's had ABS availible.. did they? either way im pretty sure i dont have it, no light in the dash and ive locked the brakes a few times when the freeway turned into a parking lot.

my 95 has abs. take off a tire and look at the wheel if theres another line going to the back of the heat shield besides the brake line then you have abs. or check your axle. if right behind the heat shield the axle has teeth that look like a gear then you have abs. make sure your new axle comes with a new axle nut.

A local shop like Brakemasters should charge about $50 per axle.

No I don't, are they going to slap a new ale on there, it comes pre-assembled, boot and all, no packing required.

Go to an auto parts store, tell them the make of your car, abs, etc... have them order passenger-side and driver-side drive axels, take it to a mechanic and have him install it and be done with it. It should come to around $65 each plus a $40 core charge. Yes it comes with the boot. And what does it matter if your car has abs anwyay... you're not changing them yourself. Since you're so worried about it, stop posting and check if your car has ABS yourself. No reason why this thread needs to be this long.

It does matter about the abs when he orders the axles they have a ring on the end for the abs sensor, so if you get the wrong one your mechanic wont fix it if you have a gxe or se most likely you dont have abs
