When you are ordering the timing chain tensioner, they may assume the cam chain tensioner because the ID on the illustration is the same. Make sure you are ordering the "main timing chain tensioner". Those are often mixed up with the camshaft timing chain tensioners. You'll have to be specific with them.

Also, a quick thing to note here. The part number for the timing chain tensioner for a 4th gen main tensioner has superceded to the 5th gen tensioners part numbers. There's a FSB thing about the 4th gen tensioner defects. In addition, this superceding affects the chain guide that goes with it. So you'll end up needing both the new main timing chain tensioner and a new chain guide. On post #37's illustration, you will need both #20 and #21 on there. I just want to clear this up so you'll know what to tell those guys.

Take 20 minutes to replace it yourself using a ratchet with a 10 mm socket and a rag to stuff in there.

If he's buying the superceded chain tensioner, he'd have to replace the new chain guide. Then, it won't be a 20 minute job anymore.

Thats the timing chain tensioner right?.........I'm currently doing my water pump and I had to remove this.........not too hard to remove and replace.........just get a set of magnetic inserts for ur sockets so you dont lose the bolt inside.

I think several (and perhaps even many) orgers have replaced just the tensioner and left the original guide in place. It's not ideal, but it helps eliminate most (if not all) of the rattle associated with the older worn or in some cases defective tensioners.

yes, that's it. and if you are capable, you should try to blow pressurized air into the tiny little oil hole behind where the tensioner sits. Things can clog up in that thing, and it's recommended to air it clean. In your case, I don't think you can access this recommendation...

Just another thought, but check the tensioner pulley. I thought for sure my chain was rattling, but it was just the tensioner pulley being a little loose.

that's right, if you are doing the guide too, you can't do it thru the hole. you'd have to pull the whole cover off. It's a job, but it's recommended with the newer tensioner design. The new tensioner has an angled hammer that sit flush to the hammer face on the new chain guide. If you use the new tensioner without changing the guide, it won't sit flush and I dont' personally know the outcome, I changed the whole set.

I'm actually tempted to go to a junk yard and look for a old version timing chain.
karma: What are the chances of me putting a broken timing chain tesioner in my car and destroying my engine.

lol, you need to rethink about doing that over and over. There's Factory Service Bulletin called out on that tensioner.
