Well, quick answer no, long answer yes, meaning you can swap out anything for anything, if you have enough time, money, and effort.

Seems to me the transmissions are completely different, and they have a separate computer, called the TCM. You would have to wire like a madman to even get it close to working.

The 4th Gens have a TCM too..... but your point is well taken (on all other aspects).

What about the 5th/6th gen manual? ie 6 spd Could that be done to a fourth gen manual? Don't mean to jack your thread but...
Any input?

That would be easier in one aspect, as people have done it before, but it's ultimately not worth it, as there are no real gains to be had...actually it would yield more drivetrain loss than a 5spd. <- dont quote me on it, but it's common sense...more complicated = more drivetrain loss

I guess it would all depend on the gearing of the 6spd. If the extra gear is taller, would you then have better gas mileage on the highway? When I went to the track, I noticed that 3rd is not my money making gear. Usually I can take somebody in first and second, but when I hit 3rd it's all over. If the gearing is closer in the 6spd than the 5spd that would help with that problem.
I wonder if anyone has the gear ratios?
thanks

when I had my mustang I swapped a t-5 (stock 5-speed) for a t-56(6 speed from a viper) and the final gear ratio was the same or very very close but it did allow me to stay in my power band much longer (IE the gears were closer together) so my rpms did drop as much with every shift. It was a great change for me but I'm sure It was also a much easier swap. All that was done was move the cross member back and change clutches. (no computer controled tranny) Also I had make a change do to the power handling req. (I was running low 10's@ 132mph on DOT tires in the 1/4)
