Front Pipe replacement $$ any other solutions?

Went to a dealer to check the noise in my exhaust, they checked it for free since I was doing an oil change (I checked the exhaust in the morning -20C and there was smoke coming from a gasket before the catalyst) so I thought that was it. The mechanic checks it and tells me the front exhaust tube is broken and that I would need a new front pipe (1000$CDN = 870US). Now I'm going to check other shops for a third opinion, but if that's it, what else can I do instead of paying that much? The noise isn't too bad but I like my ride quiet.

plus the wonderful performance gains! yea, sounds like your y-pipe must have a leak or something. is it rusted out bad? this is a part that is commonly replaced by almost all max owners even if their pipe isn't busted. by getting an aftermarket y-pipe, you will be putting larger, free-flowing pipe in place of the stock restrictive and 'cat-ed' piping. that would probably be your best option as you can get a stainless steel aftermarket pipe for right around $200 dollars. It bolts right in; something you can do yourself in your garage. if not that, you could also check the classifieds and pick up someone's stock y-pipe if you don't want an aftermarket one, but you might as well go with the aftermarket one.

check out www.lssexhaust.com or www.warpspeed.com for their pipes. There are others, so just search around a bit. also, check the stickies and http://maxmods.dyndns.org/ for everything else.

(wow, i felt generous today, lol!!)

What model should I look into if I don't care about performance and I want minimal noise, at least close to the stock pipe? I appreciate all the help.
