8 tooth vs 10 tooth aftermarket starter.

I have been hearing a squeal at start up for about 2 years, so I know my starter is on it's way out. I believe the stock starter is a 8 tooth one. I heard before on the org that the 10 tooth is the better way to go when replacing. Also for anyone who has replaced their starter with an aftermarket one, what did ya'll go for? Any part #'s would also be helpful. Thanks

Any aftermarket one will be hit-or-miss. Get a 10-tooth version - thats the updated one. I would recommend a Nissan reman for 180 bucks. But that's just me.

Is that the price from the dealership with or w/o core exchange?

With core exchange. And your local dealer won't have that price. Try Pinnacle, Courtesy Nissan, nissanparts.cc. etc.

I just replaced my sister's starter with a remanufactured nissna one. Sounds awsome on startup. Got mine for 220 with core exchange. I love my woodfield nissan dealer, they give me discounts.

10 tooth will work just as well as the 8 tooth.

I don't even think the nissan one's come with a warranty at all (which is a real hit-or-miss). Even my ebay used starter came with a 6 month warranty $40 shipped (4months running strong). If it ever fails I'll suck it up and walk down the street autozone.

I just replaced my second autozone starter and it cost me a big fat zero dollars thanks to the lifetime warranty. took me just over an hour to dismantle, remove, install and put back everything. First time took me 2 hours total.

On a sidenote the 00's starter died the exact same day, no autozone or checkers carried it in the state, had to go to napa. And the 00's starter was 3 times harder to replace! (strangely)

dmplus, did autozone give you a hard time about it or do you just bring the old one in and get it swapped no-questions-asked?

Iron, if you buy a reman, get one from autozone or others who will offer a lifetime warranty. I think mine was only $140 so not that much more. There may come a time where you will have starting issues and question the starter--nice to know you can always trade it in no charge. Personally, I would try to get a 00-01 since they are reportedly better.

wow thanks for all the info on this.. I am leaning towards the autozone with lifetime warranty. Sound like a good deal. Can anyone tell me off hand what size bolts are on to remove the starter.?? I never looked when I had my intake on, but I went back to stock and would like to know before removing the stock intake to get to the starter. Thanks

14mm and 17mm - use a prybar on these

The wire from the battery is held on with a 12mm nut

yep 17 mm closest to the firewall, and 14 mm for the other. They are on SUPER tight, if you'll need a cheaterbar or some crazy muscles to budge them.

I dont remember using any 12mm, only 10mm for all the intake stuff and battery, some pliers and a screwdriver for the hoseclamps

I havent returned the autozone starter core yet (you buy the new one but when you return the broken one they credit you back 100%), but I dont think they'd be cranky about the return.
