help with axel

So I had my front left axel replaced a few months ago. Today when getting some other work done i saw a a bunch of grease on the inside of the tire and found out there is a small hole about 1/4 of a inch long in the rubber boot. I was wondering if there is any way to fix it or should i replace the boot? Is it hard to replace the boot? What do you guys recommend?

So worst case senario, the whole was created during install and you've been driving for 3 months with it like that.

I'd suggest new greese, and a new boot. If the whole isnt really large enough for debris to get inside, I'd replace the boot. Of if there is still a warantee, tell them you have whole in it already and it need to be fixed under warnatee.

The hole wasnt there during install cause i didnt see the grease until today plus i keep a sharp eye on the car. I would have definately noticed it when i changed my oil last time if there was grease leaking.

Yeah I am gonna try to get the boot replaced but it seems like more work to replace the boot then to replace the entire axel from what I read on Motorvate.

Anyone have any estimates on how much it would cost to replace just the boot? I know the entire axel can be replaced for $160.

BTW will a bad axel cause the steering wheel to shake ALOT at 70+ mph?

If your stearing wheel is shaking at high speeds, thats probably your alignment or your wheels need to be balanced.

I think you can replace the boot without too much trouble.

Well see this is what happened today. I got both sides of my inner tie rods replaced because they were bad. With that I got a wheel alignment done as well. I also replace the driver side axel cause the boot was ripped since months. I had replaced the passanger side axel a few months ago and today while getting those other things done we noticed there was a small puncture hole in the passanger side boot so jeff my mechanic tried to seal it up with a tube of instant gasket, but that didtnt really work. By the time i got home the axel was starting to leak grease again. Now while driving home I also noticed the crazy shaking of the steering wheel when going 70 which wasnt there when i drove to the machanic this morning before getting the work done.

So i am thinking its either the wheel alignement or something else...i did fill more air in my tire and unless i over filled it it should really effect anything.

I did notice i didnt have the shakes i use to have due to the bad tie rods.

Well I guess my best option is to call my meachine on Monday and see what he thinks i should do. I am sure he'll check it out cause he is a good guy.

thanks,
Ken

dude thats really expensive for an axel. How manytimes do you think the axel will go bad in the lifetime of the car? Probably just once or twice. So your lifetime warranty isnt giving u anything special. Your just spending more money.

A shake in the steering wheel is due improper alignment, or other worn out steering components. I had bad axle I drove on for a year, had zero vibrations when driving at 70+mph.

You should have asked for a print out of the alignment specs so that you can check and know for sure that you are within factory spec.

Have you mechanic go over everything, make sure eveything is bolted down tight, and to spec. If all these problems still are present after he's worked on your car, some free labor is due.

are you sure raxles is lifetime warantee? I though it was a limited warantee or 1 year.
