I realized couple times that when I accelerate my speedometer does not work (the speed gauge and it does not turn the mileage) until the car makes little bump on the road etc. Does anyone know the reason. Today it worked but sometimes it gets stuck for couple minutes???? any help????????

If the speedo is working and the odometer not, then you are in the same boat as I. Probably stuck on '9' am I right? Mechanical speedos are garbage.

I had this problem during the time I had tranny problems. I think the shop had unhooked the plug that goes into the tranny which caused the speedometer and odometer not to work. It also may been where it plugs into the gauges. Sounds like you better just start checking for loose connections.

Get a new cluster with either lower mileage to roll up or get one with close to or a little over and change it at the right time. This happens to many 95,96,97 maximas and I30s it is a cluster malfunction that some have been able to fix by tightening the screws on back, check connectors, etc. I would take it off and tighten everything, if that doesn't fix it buy a new one, around $50 plus ship average on fleabay.

The same thing also happens to mine and i literally have to bang on the guage then it kicks in.1 thing i've noticed is this occurs alot more when its cold thn when its hot and if i let my car warm up for lyk 10mins in the mornin then the speedo works perfect.I recently bought a cluster from a 98 I30 n its digital n i looked for the thread on how to hook it up but i can't find it.I looked at the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual n i noticed most of the wires are the same except a couple that the 98 clusters don't have.if nybody can help me n tell me how 2 do it i'd appreciate it.

I had a similar problem. Transmission speed sensor... simply unbolts and then unlatch the wire and replace.Member
I have tha same prob...I went to the shop about it twice and they replaced my speed sensor and tightened everything up but that didnt last a day...Could u get a write up on it docroadrage? cause itz about time som1 who knows how to fix it make a write-up 4 it in tha stickies so 65% of 4gen ownerz can be satisfied on wut 2 do and not have 2 keep postin about it every other week....

If it is not your speed sensor it is your cluster, get a new one problem will be gone. You can tell if it is your speed sensor because the cruise will not work if it is f@cked up. You can get a cluster for around $50 almost anywhere.

The symptoms you guys are describing are cold solder joints. You should pull that speedometer and resolder any joint that looks either grey or cracked and that should fix the intermittent problem that are occuring.

yeah mine is ****ed up too. I really have no idea...guess i'll take the cluster out and clean it real good. tach doesnt work either. it will get stuck at 1000 or 1500. if i've been driving for a few hours it will generally start to work again. ohwell I just stuck a picture over it

... mine has done the same thing. i have noticed that the speedo will kick back in when i hit a bump. however, when my speedo goes dead, my cruise drops out as well. the CEL shows no codes... but when i hit a bump or smack the top of the dash it works fine. this will be the 2nd time i have replaced the cluster.
