the oem plugs are double platinum, meaning both the center and ground electrodes are platinum tipped.
taken directly from the ngk website.
"Do not be fooled, all platinum plugs are not created equal, Platinum is a very expensive precious metal, a $2 platinum spark plug will not have much platinum in it, and therefore will not last as long as a $12 platinum spark plug. NGK platinum plugs contain the highest platinum content in the industry. Some platinum plugs have only the center electrode tipped with platinum, while others have both the center and ground electrodes platinum tipped."

Whatever you do DON'T GET AUTOLITE. When I first got my Maxima it needed a tune-up bad. I figured i'd just throw in autolites since they were cheap until I could find a good price on the OEM plugs. I put in the autolites and it drove fine for about 15 seconds, then the rpm's started jumping all over the place until the car finally died. Same thing happened to my friend with his 97 Max when he tried autolites after I told him not to. So I went out and got NGK iridiums and it runs fine.

It may have possibly been because they were cheaper plugs. Not sure. My 96 didn't get along with them and neither did my friends 97. The rpms just started jumping all over the place then it died. Everytime I started it after that it would do the same thing. Unfortunately for my friend, it happened to him when he was on the highway. As soon as we put the NGKs in, they ran fine. 30,000 miles later and no problems. I don't know if anyone else has had bad luck with autolites but from my experience, I will never buy them again. Besides I read that you shuoldn't use anything but NGK in Maximas.

ok these platinum ngks need to be gapped at .044 but..
they are al gapped at .038 so i need them to be at .044 but...
on the dam box it says "Do not adjust plug gap due to possible damge to fine center electrode." so what do i do ? also what's the deal with the washer?

I just bought some NGK Iridium IX plugs... they pulled out the G-power platinums and the metal contact arm was about twice as thick on the Iridium IX plugs... wasn't bad, I paid about $43 out the door at Advance Auto, versus the $70 it would have cost me to get the $11 a piece OEM Platinum NGK plugs... So far the car runs great... Couldn't be happier... now if only I could afford to get a knock sensor... life would be great! =)

should have bought the KS first. performance and has economy wise its better to have old plugs than a faulty KS.
