just got a 5spd swap and have some questions/concerns

well I have a 99 and my CEL light is on , so I guess to make it go away i need a new ECU, I was wondering will any manual ECU 95-99 work and also what if i get a 99 is the chip in the key stored in the ECU?

also often when the car idles in neutral, the rpms stay at 1.5 then after 5 secs or so they will drop

Thanks for any suggestions

You have a CEL because you are still using your auto ECU, you need a manual ECU and I think, (not 100% sure) you need a 99, I believe the previous years are different.

The idle problem might be a problem with your IAC or PCV, try cleaning the IAC and or replacing the PCV.

you need a 99 5 speed ecu i don't know about the security key thing. The reason why your idle is high is because you are still using an auto ecu. Once you get the 5 speed on it will not continue to do this.

I think your keys should be fine. The code for that chip is stored in the ignition housing I think.

abci30: are you sure about the idle problem being because he still has an auto ecu? I have two friends who did 5 speed swaps, one on a 2k1 and one on a 95 and they both still have the auto ecu with no idle problems.

Imo This is the ECU, becuase his Ecu still thinks there is an Automatic transmission and letting the Rpm's stay high, While in neutral then they begin to fall.

shiet....I'm doing a 5 speed swap soon and don't want to see the CEL on. Has anyone done the swap and not got a CEL without changing the ECU?

You WILL get a CEL no matter what if you do a 5speed swap and dont change the ECU. The auto tranny has a bunch of sensors and harnesses on it and when you convert to 5speed, those connectors are just left un plugged, so the auto ECU thinks something is wrong. I dont see what the big deal is tho. Ive been driving with a CEL for months now, I could care less.
