Interesting proposition...I wonder if it'd be worth the trouble of messing with the stock fog housings to make that work. As I said above, you may want to find a way to sand off the etched-in pattern on the glass so as not to ruin the beam pattern or output.

The stock fog lens isn't clear. It's contoured in a way to help distribute the beam of the fog lamp, like the 95-96 headlights. I think it'll mess with a projector's beam pattern.

That's why I bought 'em, I was hoping that I could do it somehow.

 

After seeing the CE fogs, I had this same sort of idea myself. Of course on a 95-96 like mine, I think it's more crucial...a little circular aftermarket fog looks more odd in the square-shaped hole on our bumpers than it does on the more natural hole of the 97+ bumper.

I was thinking maybe cut it to the shape of the hole, cut a hole out to let the lense of the projector come through, and paint the "cover" a flat black color or something. I think this would look similar to newer cars that have the same sort of deal with circular fogs.

Oh and MorpheusZero, the beam pattern and cutoff look great on those. You're convincing me to buy them

 

wait a min. The stock fog light lens has the beam pattern built in them. So if you retro fit some aftermarket fogs in them the beam pattern will be the same. So won't it be pointless. Just a thought.

 

Yeah, it's pretty good... they could be a little brighter but overall they're pretty good. Tell ya what, I'll trade you my projectors for your projectors, split the shipping and call it even.

You're right, but not entirely. The internal beam pattern of the fog lights will be altered, thus changing the exiting beam pattern. It will be an improvement for sure, but I'm still concerned whether it's actually worth it in the end for something that's not too visible through glass that isn't very clear (and whose beam pattern may be adversely affected).

Surely they're brighter than stock. Brightness isn't even really all that important to me...more that they are functional in bad weather (esp. fog) where my HIDs take a bit of a hurting on output. I'm also sick of seeing my nice E46's and then having these big ol' blobs of foglights beneath them. Both sets of lights being projectors would be VERY nice.

 

Yeah, in bad weather your projectors will still help more than these fogs... but they will definitely look significantly better than your stockers. They're brighter as well, 55W H3. Just not stupid bright, you know? I guess I just need HID fogs or something...

 

Isn't 55W H3 the same as stock? Either way, they're bound to be brighter since they are projectors and don't have cloudy, etched glass to deal with.

 

Think stockers are actually 35W... wouldn't make sense to have foglights that are more powerful than the lowbeams now would it?

I need to find a way to smooth out that glass, then we'd be talking....

Honestly, I think trying to retro them in the stock housings is a waste of time. It's just way too much work and at the end of the day could look way nicer and perform better with a different setup. Not to mention fogs are expensive, so I'd hate to bastardize perfectly good ones for that purpose.

 

Yeah, I'm gonna hold off on tossing the stock fogs in favor of "masked off" projectors until I see how it looks.... point of retroing is that it still looks good..

 

Quick question for you Morpheus...how is the installation of those things? Like what kind of plugs do they use and what not? Is it possible to use the stock fog plugs in the back or does the wiring need bastardized? Did you get the remote wiring kit?

 

Yeah, I got the remote wiring kit. Don't get it, it's crap--almost not worth the extra shipping fees.

The installation is fairly easy, you could actually wire it up like they tell you, splice the relay wire into the stock fog wires and leave their supplied "switch" in the on position.. it'd work the same way...

To get the foglamps to put out such yellow light, he must have a filter over the bulb. Selective yellow coatings don't make the light that deep yellow.
