i hate my bose cd player

maybe this belongs in audio, i dont know, i guess i just want some quick help

i have a 96 maxima with the stock bose stereo system and the cd player gives me all kinds of problems, especially when its hot out. even little bumps in the road make it skip, and sometimes when it skips it will stop playing for 10-20 seconds, then start again on a completely different track. sometimes when it plays you can hear a static sound in the background, and other times it doesnt play at all.

i want to just replace the head unit but i read in the faqs that you can't use the stock speakers with an aftermarket head unit, and i simply can't afford to change out the speakers and everything right now (college kid = broke).

so what should i do? should i replace it with a different stock bose head unit or am i likely to have the same problems?
thanks for any help

Read the AUDIO faq's that will show you how to do it.

Best solution though, is to remove all the speakers and get a new cd player.

You can get an aftermarket CD player and hook it up to the stock speakers. It's actually easier than you'd think. It doesn't sound THAT bad either. My system was hooked up that way for a while, untill I replaced all the speakers. All you need is the adapter that is talked about in the audio forums. Go there and ask around.

Doesn't like Crutchfield provide you with all necessary installation hardware or adapters if you buy a deck from them???

I replaced my Bose with a Pioneer

It was very easy to do. Just used the regular radio harness and a antenna adapter and it's been working great for more than a year.

Get a 99 Bose, all digital no stupid ***** to adjust. Just got a 99 Bose for $45 plus $15 shipping, much better than the 96 Bose. Looks 10 times better and I never have skipping problems with mine and I live in the NE. My 96 would skip sometimes, they must have changed something over the years it is much better.

Im on my replacement too. I got a 96 tho..

some audio guru posted this a while back saying the older 95-96 Bose play burned cd's better but the 98-99's tend to play fine for awhile then they crap out... thats just what ive always heard....

I replaced my Bose w/an aftermarket and the sound is COMPLETELY different.
It definatley did NOT sound like bose speakers without the Bose Headunit.

and yes, i use all those worthless 50$ converters and junk.... sounded trashy

I have heard alot more problems with using the bose speakers with an aftermarket headunit even with the right adapter. I wouldn't change the headunit without changing the speakers. When you add an aftermarket headunit it cuts out the amp and just plays 2 ohms through the speakers that are made for 1 ohm. You can also put an 05 in dash 6 disk Bose with small mods to the bracket and it plugs right in. Any Bose will work just measure the L and W, the plugs are the same just some are different shape.

Pathfinders Bose headunits also fit the DIN unit for maximas. Im looking around for a 2002. The 2005's are nice but they dont have the tape deck. Best part is that they have the in-dash 6 disc changers and RDS. Its plug and play from what Ive heard and seen.

I had the same problems you did. Ended up replacing my 96 headunit with a pioneer unit. THough I could get the unit elsewhere for cheaper I got that along with all the necessary add-ons for a good price from crutchfield. The most important thing to get with an aftermarket receiver is a gain adapter. Before I adjusted the output with the gain adapter, my pioneer didn't sound very good. Once I did the adjustments however, the sound was easily as good or slightly better than on my stock bose headunit. Use crutchfield to find out what you need, then shop around for the best price. I was lucky enough to find a $30 off coupon to use with my crutchfield order, use google it's your friend. And get a GAIN ADAPTER please!

I have a 97 Bose OEM Head Unit if you want to buy it. I was just about to put it on eBay. I replaced it with a 2001 G20 head unit so I could hook up an auxillary for my XM radio (the auxillary adapter wouldn't fit a 97). It works fine but it does have a little static on some burned CDs. It will play CDs burned on the slowest speed...all my CDs are burned on the fastest speed and I didn't want to re-burn all my CDs. Otherwise its good as new...it plays regular CDs with zero problems...radio and tape work fine too. I'll let it go for $50 plus shipping. Its just plug and play if you want to keep your BOSE speakers. I'll even send you a print out of how to install it. PM me if you are interested.

buy a wiring harness and get a new cd player factory cd players are junk on all cars maximas dont need a dash kit except for a pocket under the deck which isnt necessary. also get new speakers unless oyur on a tight budget when i worked at a stereo shop and we worked on infinitis lexusa nd high end foreign car and we put an aftermarket radio in it sounded like crap. so wed run speaker wires from the new radio to the speakers to bypass the amp and it would be louder even with the factory speakers
