Ok...not to sound like a *****/d!ck, but if someone knew what the problem was they would have responded....OK? with that said, it sounds like you've killed your starter for one....and are you sure there is gas in the car? If the car ran for 30 minutes prior to driving then you had fuel delivery, if it just cut off you might be out of gas....do some more checking on your part and let us know what you find.

To add to nupe500's post,

While waiting for someone who knows about this situation to reply, why don't you go thru the forum stickies and do your own research. What you are looking for might be there or you might find something that could point you to the right direction.

HI,

I would bet you have burned out wires in the starter. The clunk clunk is the solenoid of the starter pushing the starter's gear against the flywheel. However, if it could also be that the starter is trying to turn over a frozen engine. The starter is the only major component I replaced on my 97, and it was 170 dollars rebuilt. Take it out and take it to a parts store for test. I still haven't figured out how to search this site.

Would be nearly impossible as he did say the motor was running for 30 minutes....engine/motor not frozen.......

if the engine was dead, why was it running? Sounds like an automatic transmission, did you check to ensure that the gear shifter is actually in Park/Neutral before you try starting....if the car is in gear the engine won't start and the starter would actually be working too hard/burn out.

ok sorry for any confusion...the engine was installed and was idling for 30mins..then we took it for a drive..where the car then cuts off...we tried to start it back but nothing was turning...tried to use a rachect to turn the engine by itself but the engine would not turn then..its a 5 speed

when the car cut off did you hear anything? smoke? well not being there...I can't do much diagnosis...does it click to want to start? Did you check the battery/alternator? fuses?

battery tested ok no blown fuses...the was no bad sound when it cut out..but i thought i heard like a wire spinning somewhere but we checked and didnt see any wires so i might have been wrong with that...when trying to start it back up all i hear is the starter going clunk clunk and starts to give off smoke and smells like somthing is burning.
