So i've already replaced an ignition coil in my 1999, but what else is a common problem??? My friend had to replace his timing chain thats costed like 2grand. I have 67,000 miles, but i have yet to hear about timing chains giving up from ppl on the org.

rofl 2grand for a timing chain...it should be somewhere around 200 i'd say cause you have to lift the motor up somewhat to put on the chain. As for them giving out you would definetly fell if it's bad.

Timing chain tensioners are a common failure item on early 4th gen models. 97 and on have no issues with the chain or the tensioner. They should last the life of the motor.

Read some of the stickys in the 4th gen section. It will point out commons problems and the easiest way to fix them, but as for the timing chain like njmaxseltd said they should last the life of the motor.

No.

All VQ equiped Maximas (1995 - on) use a dual stage timing chain. This needs no periodic maintenace or replacement. It is designed to last the life of the engine. This is a very good thing.

Your friend got raped for that price, he could of gotten another car for that $.

Tensioner does go bad around 100K for 95-96 Maximas and if not repaired quickly it will screw up the timing chain...

it is expensive to repair (around $600-800) but YOUR FRIEND GOT RIPPED OFF HARD!

the chain blew on his car causing more problems i believe.

I have a 99, my cars been making funny sounds, i hope its not the tensioner as some of you have pointed out

I got quoted 833 for tensioner + timing chain @ the dealership.

And they're the ones who'll most likely charge the most.
