Better LED writeups?

Does anyone have any better write ups for the Auto Climate Control, Bose, and Window Swtiches? The ones in the how-to's arnt that good. I've looked before but lost threads with them. Just wondering if anyone can point me in a good direction. Thanks.

Why are they not good? They are the only ones available. What parts don't you get? Seems like you don't know the basics about LEDs.

leds

the write ups are pretty good i replaced the the hazard and defrost bulbs with 5mm 1100mcd .results are banging the only problem is the the bulbs are $5 each and i need to do the auto climate and gauges. Anyone know where i can find these bulbs cheap directly? I tried ebay and there are so many sellers i dont know who to buy from. I got the other bulbs from radio shack too expensive

Radio shack sells leds and resistors and they sell 5mm 12 volt bulbs which don't need a resistor to work. The auto climate has four bulbs, and you have to take it apart all the way to the circuit board. Solder the bulbs to the copper ring (where the old bulb turned in) making sure the polarity is correct and a resistor is used on the positive side. Don't get the individual leds at radioshack get the assorted packs, instead of 5 a bulb you get 20 for less all different colors and sizes. Only some radio shacks carry these packs so call them first.

Yeah I dont have experience with LED's hence why I'm asking for better write ups. Anyways, can I use the LED's from radioshack all around? Are they going to be easier to install or something?

Led

5$/LED ouch! did u get em from exxon? try ebay...I have bought close to 200-300LEDs on ebay and they've worked for me. Only thing is they take a while to get here from HK. Just make sure that the listing indicates the brightness (mcd) operating (typical forward) current and voltage. This would help you with the calculations later. As for resistors, try local electronics stores instead of the shack. You can find a better selection in resistor values, wattage & prices. I can help out figuring the resistor values once u get the LEDs

i have bought maybe a total of 500 leds form ebay and they have all worked fine, also it is good to buy many for when you blow them, you are getting ripped off bigtim, pretty mcuh all leds are the same thing, hopefully you cannot screw up to much on making leds.

the writeups are good, i did mine, and that ishow i learned. then i started making my own ways that suit me better. just try it.... that is petty mcuh all you can, alot of people have did theirs from that write up

Ok thanks for the input. Seems that it's much easier to follow once you're actually doing it. I'll order my LED's from ebay. I just found 100 3mm 5000mcd from cwithk. Good enough? Will these LED's work in my bose hu as well?

[QUOTE=Cdg2125] Whats the dealers name from HK?

most recently I bought from topbright88-Feedback Score: 2592, +: 99.1%. Packs well in anti static bags. can't help with Bose Q..I have GXE, I am doing an ipod remote on steering, will post pics when completed

leds

yeah i guess i got ripped off paying $5 for one led. Well it got the job done i was only doing the haz and defog sw at the time. Hopefully on ebay i can find 1100mcd leds all i find there is 3000 and up mcd I think those will be to bright the 1100 mcd are bright in itself . someone mentioned you dont have to use the resistors for the autoclimate leds. Anyone else try this? What type of leds were they? On the write they talk of getting power from the cigarette lighter anyone try just using the existing power the old bulbs use on the circuit board?

Buying electrical components from radioshack is like shooting yourself in the foot. $5 an LED would be ok if they are ultra high intesity LEDs with a strong viewing angle. Those kinds are not required for this simple mod.

digikey.com newark.com mouser.com arrowelectronics.com are major distributors of electronics. I use them all the time and when I did the LED mod, I ordered the LEDs from one of those sites. I don't remember which one since I use then all often to purchase parts for my research work.

i bought my led's for 12 bux including shipping from ipodking (ebay). ships from hk. but it took ONLY 1 week. that is quick for me.

btw: the most useful thing u need to know is ohms law..
V=IR

(voltage) = (current) * (resistance)

basically u will need to know what resistor to use.
for a single 3.3volt led at 20mA, u will need i think a 450 ohm resistor.
(round up)

for a max of 3 / circuit, i think u can use a 130 ohm resistor. radio shack has only 150 ohm as the smallest, so this is fine too.

Man please dont run leds at 20mA unless you want to have them last for a year....do 15 mA

actually, u will probably be running at around 15mA cause when u round up values for the resistor, ur current will go down anyways.. (assumming u have a good 12Volt system.)

so far my other led projects have been fine using 450ohm reistors for 1 led, and 150ohm for 3 series.

well considering you are using high tolerance resistors.. you should still base ur calcuations on 14.4 volts and 15mA so that u dont risk burning them out... also make sure you use diodes on the inputs of the arrays...

I originally blew up the leds by plugging them into the wrong power terminals. I redid it using 12V LEDS instead of using the 5V ones in the write up.

edit: I now have the system on the same power rail as the climate control. So the LEDs work with the dimmer system.
