Generic alternative to Optima Redtop battery?

I've heard some really good things about the Optima Redtop battery- definitely an "upgrade"! However, I am really cheap and I don't feel like paying $120 for a battery. Can anyone point me towards a cheaper, comparable alternative? Thanx!

Its the only GEL CELL battery made to date, besides the Gell Cell batteries made for Motorcycles. The reason they're so expensive is because they are Gell Cell and dont break down like conventional batteries..Completely Sealed at well, unlike conventional batteries. There really is NO comparable option in my mind. If I were to get a battery for any of my cars I would get an Optima. I already have one in my car and will be getting one for my truck this coming winter.

Spend the extra money and enjoy

With possible Frame damage, the car will NEVER feel the same on the road, even though you get the thing back to looking 100%

As a bit of common courtesy you shouldn't jump in somebody else's thread and post your own totally unrelated question and 5 large pictures.

The posting system is set up as it is for a reason, so post the required number of times and post your own thread regarding this.

To get back to the topic of this thread, Exide makes an Orbital Dry Cell battery that is similiar in design but just as expensive. I run a yellow top. Spendy but a good battery.

Thanx bro!

And thank you for the battery info...I'm leaning towards the Optima for sure. Although I do feel a lil guilty to ditch the perfectly good working battery I have now, it's the stock one that is about five years old and the voltage is always 14.4 while I drive around...isn't that a pretty "above average" reading? Also, does the Optima battery increase voltage?

It's only an upgrade because it's a weight savings. No performance, fuel economy, or other changes. 14.4v is the voltage of your alternator, which is normal. Read the battery voltage when the car is off - it should be between 12 and 13v.

Keep your normal battery and spend the extra money on better tires.

Dave is right in that it wil not increase your performance or fuel economy however it performs better than a traditional "wet" battery in that it has better deep cycle abilities (more tolerant to the discharge/recharge cycle) and in my case provides more battery "life" to power accessories when the vehicle is off.

14.4 like Dave said is normal for the operating voltage.

you cant match the life of the red top battery to any other battery. but with the price about 120$ per redtop. and a generic battery is about 35-75$ you can almost get 2 batteries with 3 year warranty on each of them.

so you can get 2 generic batteries with a total of 6 years for almost the same price as 1 red top. There is no given life span on batteries, some will crap out in 1 year some will outlast the car. all pending the user and enviroment that battery is in.

if you wanted just the red top look i think there is a interstate battery that has a red cover on the battery.

like other ppl said here save your money for other mods and get a generic battery.

Was curious about an alternative to an optima, but Matt you put it very well that there is no other like it. . . atleast for now.

Should I need to replace, I'll go optima redtop. Dont they have a lifetime warantee also?

No i think like 3 years and I think 2 years on the Yellow tops. Nothing really special on the warentee but its a sealed case so if nothings really wrong with it the first year, your fine. That just protects you if it you get a faulty one.

My SVR battery is also a dry cell, but much more expensive, 299 MSRP, and required a little modification of the battery tray. Not light either at 72 lbs, but it is huge.

BTW, my old Optima yellow-top lasted me over 5 years, has been sitting for like 6 months, and could still crank my car.

While we're on the topic of batteries...instead of the Optima Redtop I may want to get a really lightweight battery, one that sheds 20-40 lbs off the weight of the car. I'm thinking about the Braille battery:
http://www.brailleauto.com/ProductCa...uct=13#details
Amazing how it's only 15 lbs...but does this meet, fall short, or exceed OEM battery performance/reliability would ya say?
