Broken Belt Tensioner

I started to change my belt today on my '98 Maxima and when I tried to loosen the tensioner pully the bolt snapped. I put oil on it to try to loosen it up (it was rusted pretty good) and when I turned the wrench, it just broke. :wtf :bash I need to know where to get another piece. I believe I will have to get the part that goes behind the pully as well because the bolt broke off in the nut-type piece.

Theres a little Paint illustration of what is broken.
I pushed the pully back down so it seems tight enough to hold the belt and tightened the bolt on the pully itself back up so it will hopefully hold it down enough.

If someone has a VQ that they happen to be parting out, or know of a quick place to get one, please let me know. I am trying to use the dealer as a last resort.

Thanks

mine broke too when i was installing my UDP. it really sucked because it was about 2am when i was finishing the udp install and it broke. i had to go to work at 8am. Definetely didnt have time to go to junk yard so my friend and i made another bolt by taking two bolts in the shop and welding them together. I think now my tensioner bolt is the only 15mm on the car.

this is courtesy nissan(a dealership) pretty normal price for it new. You shouldn't need anything other than this assembly cause that's what I got when this happened to me and it worked fine, you will have a time getting it off the car though.

Thanks a lot! Could you rate the difficulty of installing this for me? I plan on doing it this weekend. I had to drive the Maxima to Knoxville so I just picked up my 240 to drive back up here to KY and left the Max in TN. GRR, These things seem to happen at the most inconvenient times huh?!

Yes they certainly don't happen on your FIRST day of a vacation that's for sure!! Umm it depends. My bolts (3) holding the pulley assembly on the car were pretty tight but not rusted on so they were pretty easy once you get the wrench in there. I think they were 12mm but possibly 14 cause that's popular too. then you have to undo the bolt through the pulley(when tightening back up don't worry about it being too tight, it'll still spin when it's as tight as you can get it. If it's not tight enough it'll spin off the bolt and you'll need a new one!) and take it off and reuse one or two parts and put it back together and on the mounting plate/assembly then put that back on the car. it's not very difficult just not much space there to work with. If you still have your stock horn it will be a little worse too.

To make it easier to reach I'd suggest jacking up the right front and taking the wheel off the car. This will be especially neccessary if you are lowered.

Hey thanks man, I will get the part this weekend. Question, do I have to get the whole assembly, pully and all or is there a set without the pulley, just the tentioner peice(sp?)?
Here is one part number and desc. that someone got for me through the Nissan FAST program. Is that the same part that you posted from Courtesy? I will order from the local dealer (My uncle owns it).

I haven't really looked at it since I am back in KY for the week (I go back to TN on the weekends). It looked to me like I would have to take the pulley itself off (using the bolt in the middle and it will slide off) then the three bolts you are talking about (the 12mm) will be accessable. Is that right?

Thanks a lot, I just want to make sure I have this straight. I am pretty sure its pretty straight forward but I tend to get into things then have to really rack my brain to figure out how it is supposed to work.

I will find my PN that came on the bag mine came in. You will get the pulley and the actual tensioner bolt cause they are permanently attached to each other. I think the room is so limited that you will have to take the three bolts off to get the pulley off, Not the other way around...

I wouldn't get the pulley if you don't need it.

The question-mark shaped threaded piece and the adjusting bolt can be had for under $10-15. Just fit those on your existing bracket.

Drop the whole thing from under the car (the top bolt you will have to reach in through the engine bay) and take it apart keeping track of the order. Swap in the new pieces and slap it back in, ready to go.

No, they are not. I have at least one of the little bags from Nissan from the two individual parts I had to replace.

Sorry, I worded that wrong. The pulley can be taken off the bolt. The bolt and the tensioner part are permanently attached to each other. I was told that there was a $3 difference between the two parts

Correction: I just got the assembly this morning. The threadeed peice can be bought by itself but I figured it would be more trouble than it's worth to get the broken part out of the bolt. The threaded part itself was about $15 and I got the whole thing for $36 so.. Anyway, here is a picture of how it comes apart, just to clear it up. Every single peice will come apart.

^^^ Exactly. Now you DO know the order right? It will be obvious because the pulley will rub or be out of line if it isn't.
