Oversized brakes with stock components.
Oversized brakes with stock components.
I know I know... Search. I work at walgreens and use a lot of gas I have no money to spare.
To get oversized brakes, can I just buy a bigger sized rotor and cut the metal around the vents on the stock rotor and continue using the stock components, or is a bigger caliper required, if I can use a bigger rotor only from brembo or someone of the liking what part number or size can I get?

You WILL need some kind of bracket to move the caliper up or it will hit the new rotor.
You're best bet is to use the Q45/J30 calipers on their rotors(modified, shaved 3mm off the diameter)

Using a bigger rotor will also require relocation brackets for the caliper.
Im not sure what you mean by "cutting the metal around the vents".
Going with a larger rotor may not do much, maybe dissapate a bit more heat, but usually with a larger rotor will also mean that they will be a bit thicker as well, which will require a different caliper.
PM Nealoc187 I think he may have done it
IMHO, if you are hurting for $, just make your stock brakes work as good as possible. IF you are ready to step up, the cheapest bbk that's worth doing is using the 13" cobra rotors + my bbk brackets/rings + J30/Q45 2 piston rotors.
You can pm me for purchase info for the brackets/rings
You can read about the conversion here: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=468945
He probably means cutting the dust shields behind the rotor. Larger rotors do help w/ heat dissipation. But mostly, it allows you to take advantage of the much great torque you can apply to the brakes when the caliper is moved out.
Nealoc187 did the conversion using the stock 4-gen calipers. But he had to grind down the caliper to make it work. IMHO, I don't see that as more than a 1 off custom type mod. Especially when cheap 2 piston Q/J rotors are easy to get.
One thing he's got to remember is going up to a 13" rotor will require you to change to a 17" wheel min.

I currently have the 2003 17's on my car, and I am awaiting my enkei evo 6's (18's) so I have the wheels, do you seel just the brackets and rings or do you sell the whole package. I would like to get Xdrilled and slotted rotors so when I buy those would i just purchase them as though I was buying them for a cobra?
and im assuming you meant? cobra rotors, your kit, and 2 piston *calipers* off the j30/q45?? im new to the whole bbk thing. :-/

If your current brakes are failing then it would make sense to upgrade instead of getting direct replacements. But if your brake are perfect working order, I would wait a while until there is good practical reasoning behind replacing your brakes. Also if you ever replace your brakes, search for a mounting kit that would allow you to relocate the caliper so you could use a bigger rotor. None of that using the 300zx caliper in the stock mounting location, and have to shave a 300zx rotor. The 300zx rotor is already tiny as it is at 10.8", a 350z rotor at 12.8" or a Cobra rotor at 13" would be an upgrade. Check to see if these parts will clear your wheels.
12.6"
Like they said I did put 13" rotors (cobra) on my car and used stock calipers, but I didn't do it that way by choice. I was the first one to put 13" cobra rotors on a max (thanks to jeffs idea of using them) and there were far fewer options for BBKs back then. I had to do hours of grinding, test fitting, and grinding again on my torque members to open them up wide enough to fit over a thicker rotor, and to get the brackets correct. The entire project ended up taking me about 26 hours when I tallied it up, though I was using some shoddy tools back then. I could do it now much more quickly.
There are much easier ways of doing it now.

I just sell the brackets/rings. You have to round up the calipers/rotors/ss lines/extra mounting hardware.

I have metal to metal scrapping on the stocks.... soooooo its time to replace.
Shoot me a Pm if your interested in a BBK. You will need calipers and lines but I am selling everything else you need.
I am selling
Brackets,
Hubcentric rings installed in rotors
Bolts
Rotors
